primer probs

After I sprayed the last of three coats of primer it appears (although I havent touched it) that its a lil grainy. Can I sand it a lil bit to get rid of that grain before I start spraying the actual color? If I can, someone please recommend a grit sandpaper to sand this lil bit grainy crap off....

ps. I dont think its dust as it got covered in a sealed box as soon as i made the last swipe of the rattle can. Im guessing its because I made a pass or so a lil closer (inch or two) then an arms length as recommended!

it would help everyone here if you told us the brand of primer you used. chances are someone here has used it too and can give some feedback. I say look at the can you used and see if it tells you whether or not you can sand it.. they usually say "sandable" if they are. good luck

Its DupliColor Grey Primer/Filer not real sure about the filer part ( i think its supposed to help fill scratches and such for cars) I asume it will work the same way with the model. Yes it is sandable.

Im just curious as to what grit to use on it. I dont want to get rid of primer so much as get rid of the lil bit of roughness thats there.

Smooth it over with a very fine grit, at least greater than 1000 grit (I've known some people to use 4000 to smooth the primer, but that's on Gunze Sangyo Mr. Surfacer which sprays much finer).

That way, you create a smooth surface for the paint to go on to. The smoother your surface, the less chance for orange peel.
