New Voltage Regulator

I recently replaced the Voltage Regulator on my '67 VW Beetle. I understand there's a breif period of burn in, but i'm not sure if this is normal.

The new VR has a pair of springs just inside the mounting point. These springs get EXTREMELY HOT, Red Hot, when the engine is running. Since I have no idea how the unit works, I'm not sure if this is normal behavior. As it's new, this heat is expelling smoke, but I can't tell if this is normal, or if there's a problem with the unit.

Just before the old VR went out, I replaced the Alternator, is it possible that the new alternator is generating too much charge? Or, is my battery dead, and the heat is due to a full-on charge?

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not 100% sure, But from an electronics point of view, I would say : No, It should NOT get hot.
I would test the alternator,Wirses, and battery. If they're ok, then try annother VR.
If something goes bad it's allways good to find out if it's age or cause/effect
