Im trying to see if anyone has had some problems with the light on their 96 civic heater controls. If I slam the dash the light will come on. However next time you turn the headlights the lights do not work. Can I replace a bulb, or is the bulb inside the heater control box? Does the plastic frame pop off around the radio and heater controls? Thanks

I hear u. Altough i have a 94, same problem. Ive taken it apart, and the lgiht bulbs are not even bulbs, they are some kinda tiny diode, if thats the correct english term.... anyways, its not the two diodes, its actually some connection loose. Hondas suck in that way, have you noticed how on most aged automatics the lights next to the shift stick don't glow unless you hit it?
So yeah, you can pop off the plastic cover, but at least on the 94 you have to take out the radio and underneath are 3 screws that you gotta undo. Then you can pull the cover off, but be carefull because its fragile and you can mess it up if you try to pry it off with a screwdriver. Hope this helped :)

Okay, sounds like a very easy fix. I will solder the connections that you are talking about. Thanks for the help!

Thanks Emilio I appreciate your help. Here is what I found. I think what emilio is talking about does not apply to my 96 model year. I am going to write up a quick procedure that will hopefully be beneficial to everyone that has had this problem. The haynes procedure does not even cover this very well.
Problem- Heater control lights don't work, sometimes when you hit the dash they will come on.
Fix- The heater control bulbs (2) need to be replaced.
This is easier said than done. here goes
Step 1- Pop out the hazard and defroster switches and remove the 2 screws.
Step 2- Remove the panel that is in front of your knees if your sitting in the drivers seat. There are 3 screws.Disconnect the power mirror harness.
Step 3- Remove the ebrake/elbowrest panel screws and also the cupholder screws. Slide both of these towards the rear of the car.
Step 4- Open the glove box and remove the 2 screws holding the panel near the center panel. There is 1 on the top and 1 on the bottom. Now on the other side (drivers side) there are also 2 more screws in the same spot, remove them.
Step 5- Remove 2 screws that are left holding that panel in place They are in the center of that panel facing the roof of the vehicle. This panel will now pop out, remember to remove the cig lighter harness.
Step 6-There are 2 screws that hold the radio in place use a 8mm socket and take these out. The radio will now come out.
Step 7-There are 2 screws that hold the bezel in at the bottom, they face up towards the roof, remove them.
Step 8- Be very careful and pop the bezel out, the vents are a pain in the ass and I ended up breaking one.
Step 9- Disconnect the cable and both harnesses to the heater control. Now you can see the 2 light sockets, these will pull right out while you squeeze the sides. Replace the minature bulbs. The blue rubber booty will come off so you don't have to buy a new one. I used latex gloves while handeling the bulbs. Not sure if you need to but why not. Now you are ready to reassemble everything!
I hope this helped out. there may be a better way to do it but this worked for me. Good luck!
