top speed and od

hey guys whats up , i have a 98 auto i maxed out my car a couple of times and i noticed that i reach 120mph easy w the od button off but when i turn it on nothing happens whats wrong w my car:(

What are you expecting to happen at that speed? The rev limiter kicks in and you can't exceed it unless you get your ECU reprogrammed to remove the stupid thing or you add some kind of piggyback ECU.

The O/D function is purely for gas economy purposes, to save gas by shifting the tranny to 4th gear, when you remove the O/D it will shift to 3rd gear for passing power. As far as I can tell from what you posted, your car is fine.

Unless you have some other expectations you didn't mention, tell us what you were expecting to happen when you pushed the O/D button at 120 mph?

well thanx for replying but my car at 120 still on third and i was expecting it to shift to forth when i push the button , i dont have a speed limiter anymore:devil: but in the same time the damn thing doesnt work:(

i almost forgot , i know some guys that reach 120 on third then they turn on the od and they get to 130

Man you talking some stuff I've never even heard of, you mean to tell me just by releasing the O/D button their car kicked up another 10mph on the top end.
Not Dissin but that sounds a lil fishy, but I'll check with the fellaz on the .org to see what they have to say, they usually would know, they have a lot of knowledge on that forum, not that this one doesn't.

I don't think taking the O/D does that much for your car except as I stated before that it is automatically set-up on our cars to help us save gas when we are just driving normal.
You remove the O/D (economy mode) and your car rips because the tranny selects third gear where there's a lot of torque.
I could be wrong though, I'm not an auto expert but just removing the O/D in my car has never netted me 10 mph on my but then again my rev limiter is still in place.
Like I said, I'll ask the guys on the org and get back to you.

Is 120 supposed to be our top speed? I have a 99 and I could swear I have gone faster then that.

When I first got the car, I took it to the tollway (Long, strait, concrete on both sides so there is no place for cops to hide) and punched it to see how fast it went. I got up too about 120 in 3rd and was about to hit the redline. I was kinda disapointed because my old 4 banger could do that but when I let off the gas the tranny shifted into OD and my revs dropped down too 4k which let me push it up too 130. So I think OD does make a difference.

But I am not a Maxima guru like you b2k, so I could be mistaken. I will however test this out when I get my max back from the shop.

i agree the top speed without the speed limiter is more than 120 for autos because i had to drive from cali to maryland and i maxed out the car more than once and i got to 130mph but now i can't do it any more and i feel that my car doesn't shift to 4th gear

I never said that I was a Maxima guru, I only thought what you said sounded fishy (this statement was made about what the car was doing, not your claim, that's why I said, no disrespect intended) also my name is bk2, not B2K<that is the lil boy singing group, haha.

So I guess this may help to answer your question but if not I can get the other replies and post them if you would like to read them, just trying to help, not be sarcastic or doubting your claim.

Here's another reply to your question on the OD:

In an automatic 4th gen Maxima, you can hit 130 mph from 3rd or 4th gear, OD on is 4th gear, OD off is 3rd gear. You will hit 130 much faster in 3rd because 4th is geared soooo long in the auto. 4th gear at redline is 170 mph, to give you an idea. Of course it will never hit redline in 4th gear.

only some 4th gen GXE autos have a speed limiter. others do not.

b2k if the od off u'll never shift to 4 th gear, the car supposed to shift to 4th when u hit the button but my car doesnt do that , the tc should be locked on third unless u go slower it will downshift, thats all my car doesnt shift to forth at all i mean i dont feel anything is there anyway to find out for sure, thanx guys;)

To Max95, I didn't realize that only some 4th Gen have the rev limiter and other did not, that seems a lil odd. Did the manufacturer make them like that fresh from the factory? Also is there some kind of reason for them doing some and not all?

BTW, the post I made in reference to an automatic 4th gen came from someone over at the org, not by me, so I was only quoting, I really didn't know those things about the 4th gen, cause I have a 5th gen.

Anyway we can all do a lil research to find out some more info on all of this stuff relating to the O/D, that way we'll all be a lil bit wiser.

I have a 95 GXE and have topped out at 140mph with the overdrive on. If I am not mistaken the GXE is the model that is supposed to have the limiter but for some reason mine doesn't. Can't explain why just glad that it doesn't. I have noticed that when driving with the overdrive on and I then take off while passing I can feel it kick back down to 3rd gear and the rpms go up.

i think theres something wrong with my shifter, check it out today i drove my car i started exploring when my shifter on Dthe od on or off theres no difference what so ever but here is the trick i pushed the shifter backward a little without shifting to 2nd and the car surprisingly downshifted to 3rdand when i turned on the od the car upshifted to 4th so when its naturally placed on drive the od doesnt work and when i move a little it works:devil:

I heard something similar to what you're saying over at the org. I guess it's real nice to not worry about a stupid rev limiter kicking in, I really hate that feeling. It's like when you at the top end, you feel the pedal kicking back at you, that sucks.

guys i saw the word rev limiter on ur posts but i assumed you meant the speed limiter, anyway here s some info all maximas and i mean all alll all all come with the rev limiter to protect the engine , but the one we should be talking about here is the speed limiter since wer talking about top speed , right:smoker: , ok some maximas come with it and it kiks in around 120 and some dont u know ur car more than me find out if u dont:eek:

When is the rev limiter supposed to kick in? I run a 96se and have been able to break into the red. Still getting used to powershifting an automatic. Heh.

hi there i think theres a few thing differents on GXE maximas...i have GXE and it comes with sunroof, bose luxury sound system, wood kit, the only thing that dont have is leather and white gauges....i buy on ebay the SE rims for 200 dollars ship with tires!!!!!!!!!!! good deal ha?

i hit 130 mph and i didnt see any limiter on my car. over that speed is very slow to get more speed

So you're saying you went pass 130 in your GXE? Did you have your OD on or off?

I would like to know because I tried to past 130 with the OD on and off and I still couldn't pass 130, I kept feeling a slight kick against the gas pedal when I hit the "speed limiter"< Madmax was right, I was just quoting it wrong.

Did you buy your car used? The reason I asked is because a lot of people have been buying Maxs' lately with the speed limiter removed and they themselves hadn't realized it when they bought it (no one told them) until they took it to the top end.

I would love to go past 130 without having to buy a chip to remove or reset the speed limiter.
Let me know what's up with yours, I have the GXE also.

my GXE is used...but the previous owner was a mommy hehhehe a old person i mean.....i dont know why my car doesnt have limiter...but i didnt pass the 130 mph...you will need be with OD on........and like a 5-10 miles to get more than that.. i know other MAx owners can get 140+ but is not my case

130 is ok for me....i know my car is not a ferrari or porsche to drive at that speed....is not safe

if you want to be a good driver...get 125 with the OD off......and then put it on...you will get a little more speed

Well I believe the 4th gens can hit 142 at the Max's top end, 5gen 2k/2k1's can only do 130. I thought you may had a 5th gen and went to 130 plus only the 2k2/2k3 can go higher than 130 in the 5th gens.
I have been up to 130 that is why I know that it's all the 2k/2k1 can do.

I definitely do play it safe, even if I did take it to 130 it'll only be for a very short burst on an open highway. I'm no fool, it's not safe at that speed to try and sustain it for any length of time.

ok im a little confused...on my 97..the light on the
guages...says "O/D OFF"....when should i be driving wit the light on..when im racing or when im drivin normally?...lol im confused

well when my buddy had his 97 max SE he was able to push it to 120+ while turning in third O/D off we also cut the speed lmiter which really didn't do anything bc we didn't have the chance to find out what the outcome was bc he sold his car and got a 2000 GS-R and now he runs 14's all day with intake and cam gears :)

yes we did like the max but it was too expensive to get into upgrading while now he has his 2000 GS-R with mods to many to list and he's having fun spanking anything that apposes him while if we were still in the max our loss record would have been disgraceful. Now I am an integra owner i currently own a 1990 LS integra stock for now but by end of summer it'll be on mean killing V8 machine just like my buddys GS-R Flame me and him all you want it doesn't really matter to us.
