I'm looking for Pontiac forums with perhaps a more technical, hand-on bent; I posted the below here in the Grand Prix forum recently; no replies. That's OK, maybe no one here knows the answer -- but I need to resolve it so if anyone hangs out at a site where I might do better in terms of replies, please share. Thanks.

Tach installation: 1991 (this post)

Two years after he first asked for one, I bought my younger brother a tachometer (AutoMeter) for his 1991 Grand Prix, 4-door w/slushbox, for Christmas.

Now, I guess I'll have to do the installation. I haven't looked under the hood of his car (uh, I suspect he hasn't either), and hadn't thought about the electrical ramifications, just where to physically mount the thing (that's not resolved yet, either). Someone recently told these that this series of cars (not sure which GM series this is.... N-body, maybe?) doesn't have a distributor to wire it to. OTOH, these cars were , IIRC, availabe with a factory tach, so it must me possible.

Any ideas? Or will I be returning the tach and getting him something else?

Sorry, I don't know more, not a "GM guy" myself and am not familiar with this particular car.

Yeah I know the GM forums don't get 1/4 of visitors as the imports.
I will do my best to help you though.

I hope you have a 3.1v6 this is what I have researched the wiring for let me know if you have a 4cyl I will get diff info.

Here goes pull the 6 way connector off of the ignition module.
The six wires in that connector are as follows
A-C424 TAN/BLACK
B-C423 WHITE
C-C121 THIS IS THE FACTORY TACH WIRE
D-NONE
E-C430 PURPLE/WHITE
F-C453 BLACK/RED

C the white wire is where you need to connect the green(or the specified wire for your kit) wire for your tachometer. The white wire will probably be prerouted to the instrument cluster connector, so just splice into this one and hook the rest of your tach wires up and you should be good to go.

Here's an illustration of a typical tach wiring (note this is for gm hei) only not DIS.

Good info! Thanks.

Uh, no idea what engine is in the car. Every family seems to have a non-gearhead in it and in mine, it's my baby brother.

I did hear he repainted it -- I guess he had to, the old paint had about all faded and/or peeled until gone. Well, add a tach, a decent stereo, and maybe I can talk him into a set of used GM alloy wheels (I wonder what fits, not an expert on GM whatever-bodies), and it might be an OK car for him to cruise around in.

You were correct it is an N body. The bolt pattern for the wheels are 5 on 4"

N-body....cool.

So would wheels from other GM platforms (J-body, A-body) that are FWD bolt up OK? Is The General reasonably consistant on offsets, or should I sttart looking for a website that lists applications, and sizes, bolt circles, and offsets, etc? D'ya know of one (I haven't done a Search yet)?

Once talked a neighbor into aftermarket mags for his car (brand new 1981 Toyota Corolla 2-door sport wagon), and the offset was so bad the tires scraped the fender lips -- and he sold the car! I felt bad about it, but I was young, and learned a lesson about offsets with someone else's money. (BTW, it looked so good on the new wheels his co-worker asked "I want that car -- how much", so my neighbor didn't get burned too bad.)

I figure if I do all the legwork, figure out what fits, and find a decent set on eBay or wherever at fire-sale prices, he'll say "do it". Breaks my heart in the meanwhile to see a family member driving an absolutely stock car.:bloated:

Most L, N, and J bodys will swap with no problems. I really don't know any good wheel sites there is a good company up here that my wife works for www.discounttire.com they have a pretty nice web site and you may be able to get the info you need from them. I don't have much exp. with wheels and tires, sorry.
