Why hate?

Can someone please tell me why it is there are people who hate on BMW's and their owners for no reason? Ive been riding with friends and when a BMW passed us I said out loud "beautiful car" it was an M3 which deserves to be called such. But anyways, I hear from the back seat someone say "man those are so dumb, BMW sucks, only rich snobs drive them." can someone help me understand why my friends are so ignorant? You dont really have to be rich to drive a BMW, there are Buicks that cost more than some BMW's. And I happen to have a friend who drives a Z3 and he's a great guy, would do anything for anybody.
Now, Im not saying its just my friends who I have heard say things bad about BMW, its been people Ive heard in a park before or at the pool, why do they hate on such good cars?

I too am bothered by this. And am insulted and baffled by it. I could understand such being said about Mercedes (drivers and cars). A friend of mine drove a mid-nineties 740iL and was about ready for a new car. He thought he might take a look at the new s-class. So he took the 7 over to the merc dealership. He and his wife got out of the car and met a dealer. He told the dealer they wanted to see a new s-class. The dealer, having seen the BMW, said something to the tune of, "So we have decided to take a step up, eh?" Now tell me that is not snoby.
I agree that BMWs are nice cars. They are on the more luxurious and expensive end of the spectrum, but they are very performance oriented. I think we are due an explanation as to why BMW gets all the crap.

exactly. BMW and Mercedes are two big names in the states, especially with those who like to spend their money on new toys. However, a beamer is likely to cost much less than most Benz's, not to mention someone with a Benz usually thinks there car is the cream of the crop, which its not, I myself would rather have a Bentley than a Benz. And like the situation with the dealer? I would have said "Well, I was going to buy a car but, I think Ive changed my mind" and peeled out of there. So many people think their shit doesnt stink just because they drive a car that has the Mercedes emblem on it. Im not saying everyone, but there are a lot. The same can be true about BMW owners as well, but for the sake of this arguement, we'll just not worry about that...

BMWs are good cars. They have award-winning handling and suspension, many neat features, etc. Unfortunately owners like yourselves are given a bad rap by the many snobbish people who drive them. A friend of mine traded in his 1997 Nissan 200sx for a 1994 5-series, and now he (literally) thinks he's Pimp Daddy. The bimmer cost a whopping $8k.

Personally I'm not so much of a bimmer fan, as the styling doesn't do much for me (and hasn't changed enough over the last 20 years) and I'm a Nissan girl at heart. I have seen a lot of cocky jerks in BMWs driving too fast on business district roads, but I'm not going to let that color my opinion of all BMW drivers.

I agree the Merc dealer was out of line with his comment, but personally I'd prefer a Merc to a bimmer for many reasons. But that's just me. That salesman probably doesn't get many sales with that attitude.

BMWs and MBs are realy realy good cars!
The BMW isnt only for "rich snobs" its a good family compact car.
Your friends are the SNOBS not the people who own BMWs!
I don't like MB owners cause most of them "show-off" especially in europe!
Go get a BMW and start flashing your lights at me! :)

I have gotten attitudes from people for driving a BMW. Just for the car I drive! The only conclusion I can think of is that they are jealous, because I can't think of anything else. I mean they can't hate me for buying a foreign car because the US exports a lot more stuff than it imports from other countries. So what could be the real reason?

They are judging you based on experiences with other Bimmer drivers. They're not necessarily jealous...I mean, I think BMWs are nice cars and all, but they aren't ME. If someone gave me one, I'd sell it and buy something else...

But like I said above, not all Bimmer drivers are jerks, but many people assume them to be based on the small percentage that ARE jerks.

I think it is the jealosy thing.. I am a lowly carpenter and I pull up in my bimmer and people think I bought it to show off.. little do they know I paid 3000 for my ass haulin, smooth driving, safe car to haul my family of four in, when alot of the guys I work with are driving $30k trucks that they needed a loan to buy. I fell in love with my Bimmer from the time I test drove it... It wasn't the looks (doesn't hurt) it wasn't the leather (feels good all the same) and it sure as hell wasn't the name (except I know it will last me to 300k miles or more!) It is just the most fun car I have ever driven! It is a twisted world!!!:bloated:

Jealous people suck! People say they hate these cars more than likely b/c they can't afford one and are extremely jealous and the easiest way to let out their "feelings" is to curse the car. Screw them, I have a huge problem with people who think people with nice luxary cars are snobs. Just look around all the different forums for all the different types of cars and see how nice everyone is. Ignorance is inevitable and I guess we have to accept that, but screw people who talk down about a car or a person b/c they are jealous.

Tell me about it, I just said that the headlights on a Lamborghini reminded me of a celica's and they would have linched me if I was there in person.
But I've noticed that when I give people a ride in my BMW their attitude is different, they seem to feel threatened. If they normally drive a Chevy they'll be like "would you have any grey Poupon" and jokes like that, I guess to make themselves more comfortable, or if a person rides in my car that usually drives a Toyota they'll be constantly talking about how cheap and reliable their Camry is. These aren't car people so I would not normally talk with them about cars. People fear perfection, and its price.:D

its nothing to do with jelousy its a simple fact that if you drive like the average bmw driver and cut people up etc and generally drive like you think you own the road and do not consider other roadusers then do not be suprised when they react to you.
I do 35000 miles a year and can honestly say that I see far more arrogant drivers in bmws than any other make (closely followed by mercs)
I do realise that many of you are perfectly considerate etc.....but the ones that get noticed are the others
Once you get a bad reputation it takes a long time to change it so you are stuck with being hated for a long time to come and all because you were in a hurry and pushed in in front of me

You see, the world has two different kind of people, the sloths and the go-gettems. People that drive BMWs drive them because they have the money because they go out and earn it. The sloths just sit back at work, performing at their minimum just to get by without getting fired. BMW people have places to go people to see, the last thing we want is a sloth driving a Nissan in front of us slowing us down. So what may seem like you're getting cut off, is what a BMW driver has to do to keep sloths from slowing their lives down. So it is "Jealousy" because you sloths can't compete at work, make the money, and buy a god damned real car.

Jealousy- plain and simple- nothing more

I really don't envy Bimmer drivers- in Auckland- where I lived for about 3 years- every 3rd car was a BMW- so they are pretty mainstream in my view

They aren't luxury cars IMHO- they are more of a sprts car- BMW are still the knig of driving dynamics

i know
i bought my car a while ago for about 9k

people are always like "you drive a bmw"
yet if another kid my age drives a 98 civic they don't think twice when in reality they are about the same price

LOL!! Suddenly every Bimmer driver is a "go-gettem" and anybody who has different taste in cars, or better things to blow money on is a "sloth". Sorry, buddy, your logic doesn't hold up. Some of the Bimmer people I know were born with a silver spoon in their mouths, and daddy bought them the car for their 16th birthday. If that's a "go-gettem" in your book, well, I disagree. Me, I could've bought a BMW - if I'd wanted to. I quite frankly don't need a "god damned real car" if that's what a "real car" is - my super-reliable slothy Nissan "faux car" gets me around fine, thanks, and with the money I'm saving, I'm buying myself a house at the tender young age of 21. How's that for go-gettem? The nice thing about real estate is that (especially where I live) it generally appreciates in value, whereas your typical car, especially a luxury car, depreciates VERY rapidly, especially in the first 3 years of ownership. Of course, I'd comment on your specific car, but you don't deign to reveal what it might be.

But back to the topic at hand: How arrogant of you to assume that anyone who doesn't drive your chosen make of car isn't going anywhere important. How callous of you to cut people off, thinking that YOU are somehow superior to them. How pathetic that you judge people solely by the wheels they ride on - and not whether they genuinely are hard workers fallen on bad times, whether they are volunteer workers who have better things to spend money on than themselves, whether they are putting the money towards something that will actually hold its value in the future, something that a theif can't just hop in and drive away.

I sincerely hope that sometime in the future, you are able to see past the tip of your stuck-up nose. The slothy Nissan drivers are people too, and though they may not be as rich as you, (though they may very well be richer), they certainly have a better attitude.

People don't hate you because of your car, they hate you because of your petty, selfish, arrogant, pitiably bloated personality. Good day to you, sir.

couldn't agree more
I didnt start out hating bmws - nearly bought one once but got over it.
Over time i noticed the totally arrogant and selfcentered driving attitude and responded to it - its not jealosy.....I have no problems with most other expensive cars but them most of them do not have the same disregard for others rights.Come on guys we all have a right to use the roads how about a bit of common decency!

Oh here we go....

BMW owners attitude of we're the best and everyone else isnt worth mentioning....

I know a young 18 yr old M3 driver that got given the car as a birthday present and he's a kn*bhead !!

I also know a BMW compact driver that does nothing but brag about how fast his car is !!

oh and theres another BMW 320i driver that i know that tries his hardest to always be at the front of a queue !!

now if that isnt trying to prove that your better than everyone else, i dont know what is.... thats why everyone in there sloth cars have this attitude towards BMW drivers

I drive a Nissan and I am employed by the Royal Air Force as an Electrician on the Tornado F3..... so am i classed as a sloth and doing just doing enough to get by ??

like others have said... its all to do with past experiences of owners, Im sure there are some nice ones out there.... but i havent met them yet !!

wut are u talking about? ur the one who was saying the ppl in "lower cars" (non-bmw's/sloths) need to get outta the way for u bmw drivers because u guys have important "people to see/places to go." we didn't judge anyone based on their car, read my last sentence...i say that its jus a car.

but, ppl like U, do give certain cars a bad vibe. acting like u own the road simply because u drive a certain type of car is rediculous. u made the ignorant comments, not us.

none of us even said we are AGAINST BMW'S. I LIKE THE CARS. but ppl like u, who believe the car makes the person, DOES give the car a bad name. u like ur car? great...don't think it makes u have the right to cut ppl off an get to ur "important" places before anyone else tho. ur being a hypocrite about the entire issue...so unless u have any INTELLIGENT comments, then don't post back.

People notice nice cars like men notice nice women...so when one bimmer driver cuts you off thats it for the rest! Here in New Zealand peoples perceptions of BMW drivers are the same. They are envious of the BADGE and the success it implies to them.
But dont call Nissan drivers sloths just because one Nissan was.Mine will eat many bimmers, beat E36 and E46 on the track (BTCC and New Zealand Touring car Cup)2.0L)
Bmws have fantastic handling great engines and very high comfort levels but the P11 Primera/G20 is a safer car than the E36(NCAP).In a head on crash you'll eat that inline six:(
I'm not saying one is better than the other but I do make good money Own my own home with veiws and I chose a [factory]200 hp 2.0L Primera over a E36 328i which pig understeerd on downhill bends and gave b.s. mileage at the pumps!
I'm pleased to see other Nissan drivers in here just to give the ignorant FEW BMW owners a reality check...
wonder if we'll see them in the Nissan forums...:finger:

I totally agree with the guy at the dealership Mercedes is a significant step up from BMW because Mercedes is more prestigious as well as luxury oriented while BMW is more sporty driving oriented. I own an S-Class and have test driven the Audi A8, Lexus LS430 and the 745Li and the Mercedes was by far the best of the 4. I also own a 540i and as it is extremely fun to drive its no where near as luxurious or comfortable as any Mercedes. As for the snob factor I think its a major stereotype. Just because you drive a european car doesnt mean your an a$$hole

I was just giving a ridiculous response to a ridiculous thread. This topic is so stupid. I mean really, if some one has the stupidity and biggotry to "imagine" that only BMWs are cutting people off...well I said it right there. Like there aren't people in SUVs cuttting others off or what about those guys in those riced out Civics, no they don't cut anyone off. Guys in Mustangs and Camaros, now they never drive reclessly. And of course the Nissans, man those Nissan guys are so civilized. Their licenses are sooo clean you can eat off of them. I worked at a Lexus dealership and I can tell you that Lexus owners were snobs as well. I'm surrounded by STUPIDITY!

PS: look at you, from your post you seem to think you have a superior car to a BMW, so BMW drivers are not the only arrogant car owners then!

I agree that people are to quick to judge a bmw driver as a "Rich Snob". My belief about this was proven the other day when I was talking wiht A friend about the rebuild I was doing on the 85 318i that I bought with money I made and the Jerk butts in and calls me a "Richboy who is pampered by daddy's money" and says his parents are "only giving him a mid-nineties Blazer." Hows that for Bs he gets a car that is ten or so years newer and has the nerve to call me a pampered richboy.

eagerowl
06-11-2003, 02:24 PM
I've been shocked at some people's reaction to my 7 year old car that cost half of what their new SUV did. I've had people make assumptions about my income, my sexual prowess (the car is compensating), and my attitude towards status and wealth. None of these things are true. I'm not rich and I just like cars. Whatever conclusions someone chooses to draw from that is from either their bad experiences or ignorance and effects me in no way.

I've always driven aggressively...so matter what make of car I've driven. I do notice that while driving a BMW aggressively people take it much more personal and I've had many more people react negatively towards me in this car than in my Acura or VW. I'm still the same driver...but other people's reaction to that is WAY different. Oh well...

PS. If you are driving in the US in the left lane and a car is approaching you from behind a good driver moves to the right to let the faster traffic through. If you fail to do so the approaching vehicle may very well be forced to pass you on the right and then get in front of you. If you feel like this means you are getting cut off it is due to your own negligence to yield as a courteous driver would. Get over it.
