Eg started studdering last night. Any ideas of the problem?

Last night I had the rpm's up since there was some a-hole who was blocking traffic in the fast lane next to a slower driver in the slow lane. So, I downshifted and sped around him and kind of kept on speeding the rest of the way home. I've drove my car this way a few times and never really had any problems until I slowed down last night. The car started studdering really bad as I went to neutral since a light was coming up. I down shifted and I could really feel the studdering. It did this the entire way home. Studdering in neutral and getting worst when in gears. It's really BAD at lower rpm's and gets better with higher RPM's, but still always there.
This morning:
I checked the oil level (added a quart and it's good now) since my car burns a quart every half tank, added a bottle of fuel injector cleaner this morning to my half-full gas tank. I checked the air filter and it's still clean when I replaced it about 3 months ago when I first got the car.
I also checked the plugs / wires and all are fireing. Are the plugs all suppose to fire the same? I tool 2-4 off and not really a change in the idle, but when I took #1 out (closest to the distributor) the car bogged down BIG time almost shutting off. Is that normal?
My car burns oil like crazy and a co-worker even said it shot a flame the other day when behind me during the day.
Any ideas? I guess I'll be putting my order in for the GSR VERY shortly
PS <> When I say RPM's were up. I know I was not redlining it, but they were probably around 5k at times. I've read the thread on redline of an Dx and the speeds / gears were nothing like stated in that thread. I think I was doign 80 in 4th where I normally shift to 5th at 50mph.

so you took #4 out and it almost bogged down and died but when you took out 3,2,1 the idle didnt change at all ? is that correct ? how did the spark plugs look, where they all fouled with oil ? what color where the spark plug ?

#1 (closest to the distributor) was the one that caused the car to bog down BIG time! 2-4 had NO effect on the running engine.
Didn't look inside at the plugs but did NOT notice any oil on the end of the wires. I changed the plugs when I first got the car 4,000 miles ago.
150k on the odometer now.

isnt #4 closest to the distrubutor. doesnt matter. well you said #1 caused the engien to bog down big time with the engine running, so taht means that #1 is ok. but then you said #2-4 didnt change the engines idle at all when you took them out. so #2-4 are bad, #1 is good. figure out what is wrong with 2-4.
first lets start off with the simple stuff, go and check spark, spark plugs, wires, rotor, distributor cap, you need to check all those, those are easy and simple. take yoru 2-4 spark plugs out, touch teh thread to the engine somewhere then crank the engine and see if theres spark. make sure your wires are on there good. if you got a timing light then you can put it on the 2-4 because the light wont work unless theres spark running though them. check the distributor cap and see if its good, check the rotor. check all these things then come and post what you found if its ok or something is bad

I could hear them fireing as I placed the wires close to the spark plugs. I don't have a timing light. I guess I'll check the distributor cap and rotor button in the morning. I'm going to drive it to Wal-Mart to see if it improves or whatever..... I need to know because I plan to go to work in the morning and would hate to break down on I-95.

if you could also tell me what color the smoke is, that comes out of your exhaust. if you got a compression checker thingy. do a compression check on 2-4

Light gray smoke.
I picked up some new plugs and will install them in the morning. If it doesn't fix the problem the $hit will sit and I am yanking the motor for the GSR when it comes in :smoka:

the flames shooting out the exhaust make it sound like you are running rather rich, so your plugs are whats letting you down. make sure that the plugs are firing consistently, meaning that the coil is not failing. it could be that the coil is able to create enough voltage to jump the gap sometimes, but not others. your wires could also be bad, if they were never replaced. use a multimeter to check the resistance in them to see if its within spec. make sure the rotor is making contact at every point in the dizzy. check to see if there aer a lot of metal shavings in there or not and replace cap and rotor if necessary.
