Which would you rather? Performance or otherwise.

i dont think theres any comparison

i think the upcoming 760Li landyacht series from BMW will be competition . . . i think the m5 is dwarfed by the s8 in size

most people who look to purchase an m5 look more towards the rs6 as audi's contribution of competition, no?

You're probably right about that. The rs6 is the direct competition for the M5. I'll still take the m5 though.

Btw I was also looking into a 300 series Xi. How do you like yours? Is the 4wd system working for you? Also on the website bmwusa i can build an xi with the options i wanted for about 33k is which seems to me like an awesome price is that price what should i expect from a dealer or they will inflate the price?

btw... im also partial to the m5:devil:

anyway, about the e46 w/ AWD
its a good car, but for me (im not the only driver) its a bit underpowered . . . if it had been my decision, i wouldve gone w/ a 330i 5sp, but since the other driver of the car is a female lacking motoring skills, its a 325 w/ steptronic automatic tranny

if ur looking for an awd system thatll be good in the winter, this is a very compitent system, really connected to the road and hard to beat - im not sure how it compares to the rwd 325i however, so u might wanna test drive both (preferrably in a worse condition) and see if the awd is for u . . . i say, if ur a competent driver, and dont need the awd computer system controlling things, a rwd e46 would do just fine in the winter . . . this is only IMO however

were in chicago, so during the winter, traction really does help . . . and if its any comparison, the xi fairs much better then a 99 4wd blazer . . . it really does hold the road quite well, and ull be surprised ur driving a sedan

anyway, on the price, would i say its worth it for awd?? to me, no . . . we got our car off the lot, not spec'ed the way we wanted, and got killed on the price (close to 39k, it was a tough decision but we couldnt yield time for production, etc.) i would say most of the options are worthless to me, cold weather package isnt needed, xenons are highly preferred over halogens however (the cars headlights are really amazing, clear as day) i think u get the idea tho . . . the small things in a BMW besides those xenon headlights dont really make a huge impact on driving, more of a luxo preference

i think if BMWNA quoted u a price of 33k on an awd e46, jump on it . . . just remember, theres gunna be delivery fee, luxury tax, all kinds of misc BS fees which will probably make it closer to 35k (just a guess)

is it the ultimate driving machine? well, no . . . i think that title is given to select ///M autos - but it definitely gives u a good sense of connection and feel of what BMW cars are really about . . . good luck on ur purchase, ull be buying much more of a car then just a status symbol as ull soon find out once u drive one

(btw, sorry for hijacking the thread)

 :bloated:

There is not comparison... the M5 is older and should have been compared with the S6. The S8 is bigger than the M5.
The BMW is more sporting and the S8 more luxurious.

Agreed.
I havn't driven a M5, but I have driven a RS6. And it's a heavy highway cruiser. Every bit as big, luxurious and german you would expect from an Audi. But it's fast, unbeleavebly fast for a car it's size.
It's faster then a M5 straight ahead, and it's just as fast around a track.
But I wouldn't race it, it's just to numb, unlike the M5.
The upcoming RS4 on the other hand

The M5 is a manual, the RS6 is alas an automatic... That's why I'd prefer the BMW ;) On the other topics, the both are excellent cars.

The M5 is a beautiful car. Although I would take the Benz CLK55 for about the same price.

i dunno... the benz is nice and all, but u really cant compare it to an m5

the m5 is a solidly engineered car w/ a 6sp and a (sigh) dainty clutch, yet, if were talking performance here, there really is no comparison

MB's AMG cars shouldnt IMO be labeled high performance cars, theyre really more like fast luxury cars, a stock block with an s/c and an automatic isnt really what i would call high performance, its something more along the lines of cheating:bloated: their market out of a true performance car . . . by just passing it off as one

but thats only MO

I am what heep would call extremely biased. After having driven an M5 with the Dinan stage 2 software upgrade with 470 hp, I'm obsessed with the car. I didn't even realise how fast I was going also. IMO nothing comes close to it.
Neutrino, gettin rid of the cougar already? I thought you had some big plans for it in the future. Oh well, I'll help you break in the bimmer if you want :D
