Hey Guys, I stumbled across this forum and its a good thing too because i need help. I got an 89 Civic CX Hatchback and I need to know how to get the speedo cable out because its broken down by the tranny and the spring inside it all came out and i didnt see this when i bought the car so i need to know how to unhook it from the spedometer without screwing anything up. any help would be great! thanx.

still wondering how to disconnect the speedo cable  so i can go get a new one. i noticed theres 2 covers on the top of the gauge pod closer to the windshield. i think i need 2 take those covers off and undo the bolts or screws holding it in and slide the section out towards the steering wheel but i'm not 100% sure and dont wanna screw anything up so who ever has experience taking this apart to install a new speedo cable PM me or e-mail me or leave a post on here. thanx in advance!

yes the covers come off, 2 screws under it and the cluster cover will come off, 3 screws and the instrument cluster will come out. the speedo cable unclips from the cluster.....then just follow where the broken speedo cable is and istall the new one. Never done it but it cant be that hard, just get a haynes manual to follow thru the installation...

Now that that's settled (I think), I have a related question, from a pal of mine:

" I am still vexed at the speedo cable. It won't come out of the tranny case. I have sprayed Liquid Wrench on it. The liquid is just sitting there on top not doing much. The diagrams show metal to metal contact with an "O" ring under the speedo cable carrier. You getting any picture in your mind? Anyway I'm thinking of using heat on the tranny case but getting a torch down there might be tricky"

This is on a 1990 CRX, automatic transmission. Any hints would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

wow... thats weird. i havent taken mine off the tranny yet. it looks like a rubber plug going into the tranny tho. mine was broken off just above that so it might be easier to take out, is he getting a new speedo-cable? and when i try and take mine off from the tranny i'll let u know how it came off, i dunno about the O ring tho, cant picture that but yea i'll let u know. i'm prolly takin it off tonight or tommorow

"... is he getting a new speedo-cable?"
Nope. Not if he can help it, anyway. FWIW, he wants to get the speedo cable off so that he can pull the tranny.

Well, for what it's worth, my buddy finally figured it out himself...

"Ah yes, the speedo cable. After basting the thing with Liquid Wrench for a couple weeks I was finally able to pull the boot off. Just the boot! But then I could see the C-clip that held the cable to the gear carrier. I pulled the little C-clip and the cable came right out. I was standing there with this cable thinking, man, I can't believe it , the cable came out! Funny how things come together all at once! At this point I had all the lines and stuff removed from the tranny. I began to think, I might just be able to pull this job off!"

...posting this, so that it might help others with the same problem.

Take Care,
Stu
