Moved to Olds Alero
Where did U get the directions, they cannot be correct if they are telling you to ground the reciever. Some vehicles use this procedure but not an Alero. Use this procedure. Good luck
Transmitter Programming - 2000 Oldsmobile Alero
Important
Once the remote control door lock receiver enters the programming/diagnostic mode, the programming of the first transmitter erases all previous transmitter programming information. You must then program all of the transmitters.
Do not operate or program the transmitters in the vicinity of other vehicles that are in the keyless entry programming/diagnostic mode. This prevents the programming of the transmitters to the incorrect vehicle.
Up to 4 transmitters may be programmed.
Transmitter Programming Procedure (Method 1 - No Tools Required)
To program the transmitters, perform the following procedure while seated in the vehicle driver's seat:
Close all the vehicle doors.
Remove the ignition key from the ignition lock cylinder.
Press and hold unlock on the door lock switch.
Important
To successfully enter the keyless entry programming/diagnostic mode, steps 4 through 6 must be completed within 25 seconds of pressing the door unlock switch.
While holding the door lock switch in the unlock position, insert and remove the ignition key twice. Do not rotate the ignition lock cylinder.
Insert the ignition key a third time leaving the key in the ignition lock cylinder. The ignition must remain in the LOCK position for the rest of the procedure.
Release the door lock switch. The chime will sound three chimes to signal that transmitter programming/diagnostic mode is active.
Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons at the same time on the keyless entry transmitter for approximately 4 seconds. The chime will sound two times to signal that the transmitter has been programmed successfully.
Repeat step 7 for the rest of the transmitters (for a total of 4 transmitters).
To exit the transmitter programming/diagnostic mode perform either of the following:
Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
Remove the ignition key from the ignition switch.

Well everything ran smoothly untill it became time to program the transmitter. I pressed lock and unlock for the minimum 4 seconds but no response. I'll probably call the dealership and see if they can offer any help.
Thanks
Thanks

Let's double a check a few things first.
Did you hear the three chimes after releasing the door lock switch on the drivers door?
Did you press and hold both buttons on one transitter at the same time?
It is a little tricky to do, but sometimes you have to try try again. My 99 Grand Prix was a pain I went through the procedure about four times before It finally worked.
Keep me posted.

You mentioned that did you hear the 3 chimes after releasing the unlock button... okay you know when you turn the key on you hear these repeated beeps stating that the car is turned on. It beeps prolly 5 or 6 times. After all those beeps, is that when you release the unlock button and is that when I should hear the 3 beeps?
Thanks.
Thanks.

These directions are correct EXCEPT that, instead of the stated four seconds, you actually must hold the remote's lock and unlock buttons for TWELVE (12) whole seconds. After twelve seconds you will hear the chime, and you may release the buttons. Four seconds will not work.
Additionally, while the car is in the programming mode, each press of a single button on a compatible remote will immediately cause the car to chime in response. This is helpful to be certain that the car is in programming mode, and to know that the remote is functioning. At this point you may continue with the procedure by holding down the remote's lock and unlock buttons simultaneously for at least 12 seconds, until you hear the success chimes.
