Popping Plastic Bolt Covers on Ebrake Console

Anyone,
Does anybody know a good way to pop off the plastic covers on the bolts that
hold the ebrake console down on the interior of a 1991 celica gt? (I want to adjust
my brake tension & not scratch up the surrounding plastic; learned the hard way when
a putty knife didn't work!) Any input appreciated. FNJ
