Dual Exaust Conversion

I am in the process of purchasing a 1996 Honda Civic EX. It has come to my attention that every kid and his cousin has a civic. I want mine to stand out, so to speak. My first idea is to convert it to dual exaust. In order to do this, however, I would need a custom bumper with slots for two pipes. Anyone have any ideas as to the best way to do this, and an estimated cost?

Doing a dual exhaust is not even worth it for a Civic/4 cylinder car. Plus it will really kill your backpressure and kill your performance. Plus you have to think about the extra weight which wil also kill your performance. Then you upset the balance of your car with an exhaust muffler unless of course you run with a passenger all the time.
Then the piping is going to hang weird under your car cause there is no routing underneath the car, and you will not be able to lower your car much.
Anything else I missed? :0

I have dual exhaust on my civic and i really like it. I didn't lose any back pressure at all. And i can set my car all the way on the ground and my exhaust does hang down or hit. I think it looks cool, you should do it that is a mod. that not many civics have.

dual exhausts on civics dont look good to me but whatever floats your boat. and a "cost effective" to getting a dual slotted bumper is to do it yourself, borrow a jigsaw and go at it, it wont look bad because evertone will be looking at the civic with dual exhuast.
please anyone with a dual exhuast civic please go to the muffler shop and ask them to fix this injustice.:flipa: :flipa:

The jap spec Toyota Levin with a 1600cc 4age 20valve engine has a twin exhasut from the factory.
There is a Y pipe that starts in about the middle of the car.
The Toyota Altezza, Mazda 6 and oh yes the HONDA S2000 are other 4cly cars with twin exhausts.
If set up correctly it is just as effective as a single pipe, but can in the right aplication look better to some people.
The only problem with doing it on a Civic is as CivicSiRacer said the lack of room under the car. It dosnt mean it cant be done, it just means you have to be a little more creative.
And there will be no more name calling and flaming.
Its childish, and achieves nothing.

Dual exhaust can be done without backpressure loss if it is done correctley. Most shops/people will just hack off the pipe and use a y-pipe. It is almost impossible according to physics not to decrease backpressure doing so. I see lots of sport compacts around me with dual exhaust so its not exactley an original idea. Clearance is going to be a prob not matter what since you will prob have to go under rear axle. It's all a matter of preference, but I for one would never ever consider doing it. Save your money on the piping and muffler and get a different mod.

Ok...heres one for all the flamers and children to argue about...dual exhaust on a 93 civic, thats now slammed to the ground and clears no problem..its also a stock motored lx...so theres virtually no loss in power or back pressure...i know ive done all the work except the actual welding of the exhaust pipes..i also did the struts and coilovers so i know how close to the ground it is...if dual exhaust is your thing ...do it...dont let others tell you your ideas are ugly or stupid...

The S2000 has dual exhaust cause it's making 240hp. If your Civic is making that much power than I can see having a dual exhaust.
But hey it's your car - you do what floats your boat. I'm just trying to show you the performance side of dual exhausts. I'm not going to tell you what to do and what not to do.
Have fun!

As I understand it from the FAQ and some other articles and books, back pressure is the low pressure zone behind an exhaust pulse that creates a type of vaccum and pulls the next pulse along with it. It would then seem to me that dual exhaust, if done right, wouldn't hurt. I would do a dual with smaller pipes though so that your exhaust pulses dont get the opportunity to turn around or clog up on you - more room to flow can also mean more room to build up.
I think that a dual exhaust really is all about looks when you think about it. For our cars (civics) you don't need that much flow, you just don't. You can do dual with smaller pipes (stock size) or you can do a single with a wider pipe (2-2 1/2") and get the same high flow.
So yeah, I think my opinion here is a combination of everyone - do it if you like, it'll certainly stand out which is what you said you wanted, but as far as performance goes, depending on how you do things, it wont really matter dual or free flow single.
just my $.02

ps: yeah Altezzas are poopy, they're like a$$holes - everyone's got one, make your own it's fun! :D

The S2000 has dual exhausts because who ever styled the back end of the car thought they would look cool.
You could put 6 tips at the back, or just one and if done correctly it would still make 240hp.

Now this is finnaly some orginal thinking.
I believe exhausts are like arseholes, and should be kept hidden from public view.
Look at all the new European cars, they all hide the exhaust behind and under the rear bumber, the result is a very clean and smooth look to the back of the car.
If you really want to design an orginal and IMO attractive show car then try hiding the exhaust, and keep the back of the car clean and symetrical.

What kind of thinking do you have? A higher hp engine needs more flow, duh. Anyway this is pretty much mute. I'm done with this subject. He can do whatever he wants.

No if you put 6 tips at the rear you would prolly have less one sluggish car. Believe me when I say the reason the S2000 has dual exhausts is because with 240hp you need a higher flowing exhaust system. And there is a reason a Civic has a single exhaust.
but this has been overkilled. He can do this mod or not I could careless. I'm trying to point out the benefits and non-benefits of a dual exhaust on a low hp car.

Stop and think about that for a second.
Think about all the cars with more than 240hp that dont have a dual exhaust? are you telling me they are breaking the laws of physics?
Or what about the fact that most of the aftermarket exhausts for the S2000 are a single system, do they reduce the cars hp?
Or the simple fact that for about half its length the S2000 exhaust is a single pipe, its only split at the back for style.
Single or dual, if designed right both are capable of the same flow rates.

You are right but think of all the cars over 240 that DO have dual. More than not huh. Maybe those engineers that get paid thousands and spend years designing cars know what they are talking about.

You can make a dual exhaust that flows just as well as a single exhaust - don't get me wrong. I also forgot to mention the reason for the longitudinal placement of the engine, and the dual exhaust (and of course other factors) is also for weight distribution.
Having dual exhausts will balance out the weight of the car just like putting an engine in longitudinal.
But yes you could have the same flow rate of an exhaust dual or single. I would believe the dual exhausts makes the car better balanced. Ever get a Civic corner weighted? It's not pretty. The S2000 is one of the less expensive BEST balanced car for under $34,000.

I have recived many insightful comments and suggestions from many of you and am appreciative. I was wondering though, would I necessarily need a whole new bumper to accomodate two exaust pipes? I have looked into the whole process and one shop wanted to charge me $250 for a new Black Widow bumper and an additional $250 to paint it. Is there any way around this?

The only cars that deserve dual exhaust, or the looks of having it, are cars with V engines. For the love of god do not put dual exhaust or a conversion on an inline engine. Especially if its an inline 4. And yes you would loose back pressure. The more free flowing the exhaust is the faster it is getting out... loss of pressure.

Your statement is totaly false. Go and do some resurch, a search in the tech forum would be a good start, but basicly dual pipes do not have to flow better than a single, and its quite possible they will sometimes flow worse.
And I found another 4cyl car with dual tips.
The Type R or Euro R Accord.

WHAT?!?! I can put dual tips on my single pipe exhaust and you call that dual exhaust?
You can make a single exhaust flow just like a dual exhaust and vice versa. All physics and flow volume. BUt a dual exhaust (TWO PIPES coming out of the rear) will weigh more than a single PIPE exhaust. More weight equals more energy spent hauling that heavy piece of metal. Is it worth it? That is really up to the owner.

ok ok, we should stop all the flaming. if i understand correctly, one of the arguements was because of the power the s2000 makes is the reason why it has the dual exhaust. i'd think honda did it for both the looks and the performance. the reason why other honda's shouldn't/don't have dual is because they have no need. look at all the cars w/ dual exhaust, for the MOSt part, they have V-motors. this causes them to have dual exhaust so the ehaust can go back in more of a direct line w/ less bends ( i dunno heard this somewhere.) the v motors have 2 headers, inline 4's have 1. this is the main reason why they usually have a single exhaust. but to the owner who wants it. DO WUT YA WANT MAN, ITS UR CAR :D . but nah, i dunno it really jus depends, there are tons of arguements both ways, so i guess it really comes down to wut the driver wants...if u get it tho, make sure u get it done rite aite? peace :D
