When is it too much?

As far as wheels go, when do they become too big? I am thinking about this wondering what size to put on the new GTC project. I was thinking 17s or 18s, but I think 18s would just be too big for my taste, I am leaning towards 17s.

Anyhow; when are they too big?

Depends what you are puting it on. I said 21. I think 20's look good on some vehicles, i.e. large suv's trucks, that you know your not going to take off-road.

23+ is just to damn big

I'd say 18" are about the limit for good performance tires, but we're slowly starting to see 19" high performance tires. Anything higher than that is all image. Remember that wheels are heavy, and the bigger the wheel, the higher the rotating mass and unsprung weight.

I remember a quote from David Hobbes in 1998, commenting on the 24 hours of LeMans.

"All of these cars are running on 19" tires, and I remember when 17" were big tires! Soon all of these cars will be running on 23" tires!"

I would like to get some 18" Volk racing wheels. That would be choice.;)

Eh I really dont like anything over a 19" rim... 18's are pushing it for me... but I think they're my limit.

I cant stand people who 20+" rims on Fullsize Trucks/SUVs... gahh... Especially on a K series GM Truck... Its a 4x4 for pete's sake!

I saw a brand new H2 with 20+" rims... yet another 4x4 gone to waste.

If you're going to have a 4x4... its gotta be either stock.. or like this.

Not like this... *this isnt a 4x4, just showing it as an example*

It really depend on what there on. I have 18"s on my cobra and they dont seem too big, and I have never had any problems finding performance tires to fit.

I look at it this way, whatever Porsche offers as an option for the 911 is the biggest you should put on a car ;)

(16's)(15's) I like 14's..... 18's are way to big in my opinion.

It always depends on the ride - but in general after 18 or 19 its gotten to be to much.

I'll say 18" is as fas as i'll go.

I'm going with 17x8s on the 924, they're modifed 16" Fuchs centres on a 17" rim. Weight of 15lbs each.

I don't know about the RX7, whatever fits, and I can get cheaply.

The van get's 16x8" steel wheels from walmart. Cheap, they fit, and have good selection of tires. I'll just slap a set of radial T/As on though :hehehe:

I said 20's are too big. Sometimes a big wheel is required. That way, you can have a low profile tyre, which means shorter sidewall, less flex, and better handling. Of course, when the tire lets go, you'll know it....

Weight is always bad, which is why small engines should not have big wheels. I've seen Civics with 19's, that is just dumb. They dont have enough power to turn the wheels, let alone move the car. On a Mosler MT900, on the other hand, 19's are a welcome size, even 20's on that car seem OK. Still, 19's would probably be better.

For almost all street cars, 17's are about as big as needed. Just remember, we are probably getting close to the end, they wont ever be making 35' wheels:D *knocks on wood*

im gonna say 23's +

but if ur talking about cars itd have to be 19s are the max cuz 20's on a car make it look really stupid

but on trucks / SUVS 20's can look damn mean

I saw a brand new H2 with 20+" rims... yet another 4x4 gone to waste.

ya but what if ur a buisness guy that wants a nice looking, comfortable, BIG vehicle?? someone with a family isnt likely to go off roading often. And how many people do you know are gonna by a H2 and take it off roading every weekend? or buy a new H1 and take it off roading often ..thats a 100,000 plus (fully equipt) H1 that ur gonna go risk getting roughed up or dented or rolled or something...sometimes its a lot safer and smarter to just keep them in the city

and for escalades...you should put 20's on it..its got nul for offroad capablities without major up grades

No offense, but I find your point of view ridiculous. It seems the SUV has replaced the full size sedan in North America, as both a status symbol and a means of transportation. However, buying of all things, a Hummer, and then buying 20" wheels for it, so you can drive around in a city is absolutely absurd!

I'm deeply saddened by this growing trend, and I hope it stops soon. Hopefully high gas prices will bring all of this to an end, and if you ask me, it's a small price to pay.

I like the look of 23" rims on the new Suburbans... only problem is the weight of each rim seems like its double that of a 17". I tried lifting a 23 (w/ tire mounted) off the ground at this custom rim place... I couldn't!!!:bloated: Even with a 5.3 litre V8 engine I'd imagine that would just kill performance.

the size is dependent on the ride.

my friends navigator has 22s on it. and they look perfect.

i've seen 23s on new chevy suv's and they look perfect as well.

i work around trucks on huge rims all the time, and 20's are my limit for a truck, but 23's on a non dropped suv are pretty nice.

and fyi..

dayton had 36in wires at the sema show... and some other company did too...

i remember when dodge had that truck concept with 22 and 23 inch wheels and flamed tires and everyone damn near peed themselves and said, yeah, it's just a concept, those will never happen... that was like 4-5 years ago...

17s

Having 18s in the pothole state is already pushing it.

20s are acceptable on trucks if you're running 49" super swampers.
