Throttle Position Fault Code

Does anybody know what causes, and more importantly, how to fix, a 1995 BMW M3 that has the check engine light go on when idling for more than a few minutes? The fault code is showing that the throttle position potentiometer is faulty. The problem goes away when the key is turned off and the computer reboots.
