repairing the ECU

has anyone ever tried to repair a smoked out ECU?...my '90 plymouth laser turbo wouldn't start one day and smelled of scorched electrical components, replacing the transistors and capacitators is really no big problem but what about the integrated circuit? are these readily available at your local radio shack as well? if not where?, one more question....how do i find out exactly what made it go up in smoke before i replace it ....dont want another one to burn either:bonghitte

I personally have a 2G so I am not real familiar with the 1G ECU, but I do know that on some of those cars, the capacitors in the ECU will leak. if they go to bad, you will hear some clicking noises behind the dash for a while.

If the leak for long enough, they will leak onto the rest of the ECU and destroy some of the other electrical components. I guess in your case you melted a bunch of stuff. I'm not sure it the IC's are mitsubishi components or not, if they are, you might just be better off buying another ECU you can get a solid used one real cheap of www.dsmtrader.com.

Also, I'm sure if you look around online you can get an electrical schematic of the 1G ECU, I would bet that a company like Technomotive, www.technomotive.com, would have that information. In any event, good luck.
