Supercharger boost

I heard that running 6-9 lbs of boost from a supercharger is safe for a stock engine. Is this true? I am interested in a ATI Procharger supercharger for a 1999 GMC Yukon 5.7L engine. Also, detonation is a big concern for me. Does changing to a 160 degree thermostat help prevent detonation?

I have a 2000 Yukon with a Whipple Supercharger, it'll pass anything but a gas station. Normal is 12-15MPG on the road depending on the speed. I have about 70,000 miles with no problem except the very common piston slap noise on a cold engine.

Remember your engine and the rest of the drivetrain needs to be in good shape to take the additional power, or you'll leave parts all over the road. Also you'll be buying Hi Octane fuel only, so plan that in your budget.
