Power loss after adding a K&N 57i Induction kit!!!

Hi Guys
I recently added a 57i kit to my 1.6 16v dohc non-vtec and since doing so i have lost power, the only other engine mod is a janspeed rear silencer. I think it is getting too much air, I have been told by another forum that if i ran the car until its warm, turned it off, took out the fuse for the ECU, replaced it and then started it up and let it run for 60 seconds without touching the throttle it would re-set the ECU accordingly, I wasn't sure that it would work so I went to my nearest Honda garage (about 20metres from work) and they said that the ecu will not reprogram itself and the only adjustment you can do is the idle speed and not the mixture or anything else....
Anybody got any thoughts on it or any ideas how I can sort it out??
Cheerz;)

Iv never heard of getting too much air and causing problems...I know of some idiots that like to take out their air filter all together when racing...dont ask...i dont know...but the point is they dont have a problem. The only thing I can think of is the silencer is causing too much restriction. If you can i would remove it and see what happens

yes air can cause a problem, with all the extra air your car is now getting, your not getting enough fuel into the chamber to mix correctly with the added air. buy yourself an adjustable fuel regulator and i assure you your problem will be fixed.

I didnt think an engine could pull more air than it could use without some type of forced induction. huh...thats definetly something to consider when purchasing an intake system. good post crxlvr

Do you have to get an adjustable fuel regulator, or could just get a high flow fuel rail and larger injectors.

There is no need for larger injectors with just bolt ons. You should just get the fpr and turn the pressure up a bit. That should compensate for the mild mods you have.;)

civic 16valver - whats up with the word "Cheers"?
i know a few people that say that too. is it just a replacement for "thanks"?

You do not need an adjustable FPR for the k&n air filter you put on. And the ppl that take their filters off when racing are not idiots, they simply want more air, which is what a Honda needs for speed and Hondas respond alot better to this than alot of other cars. Your problem would have to be the silencer, unless you didn't mess something up installing either of these two mods.

Is the induction kit actually just a filter? Im pretty sure it isnt

I might just try to reset the ecu that somebody has told me about but I want to know how to do it in a lot of detail becuase i dont want to knacker it up coz i use this car for work so if anyone else has done it I would appreciate a step by step guidehow to do it.

Cheers is British/Aussie for "bye" or thank-you (Aussie: "Cheers mate") :p
If the K&N is sucking in hot air from the engine bay, then yeah, you'll be losing power.

The ECU is such that it will reset itself eventually, but if you want to help it along, resetting will do this straight away. Like you’ve already said the car needs to be warmed up first.
Step 1. Warm up car
Step 2. Turn engine off and pull the hazard fuse ~ 10A (this is for the siR, probably the same for your car, mine is located in the fuse box under the hood/bonnet).
Step 3. Wait 15-20 sec’s and put the fuse back in.
Step 4. Turn engine on and let it idle for 10-15min. DO NOT touch the gas/accelerator pedal!
Step 5. Turn engine off.
Step 6. You’re good to GO!
This will allow the ECU to learn the new settings, i.e. how much air is coming in to the chamber, thus altering the amount of fuel accordingly.
However, as Setanta already said, the K&N have a very poor design, most of the induction kits for the CRX’s/Civics bolt straight onto the throttle body, which is the last place you want it as it’s fairly hot their! You will loose power sucking in warm air. If this is the case, you need to get a induction pipe that positions the cone filter near the battery and add a cold air feed from the front of the bumper.
Aftermarket induction’s will loose you low down power and increase top end power, so take that into consideration. How do you know it’s actually loosing you power? Just feeling it is probably not the most scientific way, put it on the rollers with both setup or a cheaper option is to take it on the track (but this is less accurate).
Also as someone has already mentioned it could be your restrictive silencer.
Cheers :D
