$.02 Tip on Intakes

After reading some threads on the FAQ about intakes, I thought I'd share what I did for mine.

When you gut out the resonator box and all the other crap, get yourself one of those 25-30 pipes and filter of choice from your friendly neighborhood auto parts store.

Then head on over to your favorite neighborhood hardware store, yes, hardware store. Find the appliances, then the Dryer tubing section.

Buy yourself a $2.00 piece of flex/extend pipe - just like the one behind your dryer. And buy yourself a connector cone that the small end fits the flex tube and the big end fits over your filter of choice.

The flex tubes come in a wealth of sizes and are easy to manipulate through the old airbox housing (right through that lil hole left over) and to the bumper. Where you go from there is your call.

I cut out the left "eye" on my 5th gen. and did som fanagling to get a quality sccop in the "eye" to direct the air into the tube and up to the filter with is surrounded by the cone connector.

Its inexpensive, easy, and works pretty good. A quality CAI for under $60.

just thought I'd share, now of corse there are better ways to build an intake, but if your ricin' on a budget...

your also missing the fact that will hurt your performance... geesh the tub is no where even near smooth on the inside and will disrupt the airflow. and also there will be to much heat that will go into the tube causing your cold air to be nothing of the sort. now if you want a cheap intake check out this site... http://www.teamdelsol.com/howto/coldair/diycoldair.htm
full instructions.

and like i said about the motor swap thing... feel free to ask me anymore questions about this shit over e-mail...

Ricin'- from what I've read on here, it is defined as those civics that have loads of stickers, neones, speakers, and all that other stuff that make the car look pretty but do nothing for performance. For all intents and purposes, that's more or less what my car is. Except I don't have the Typre R sticker that adds 20HP :), my car right now is a wanna be bad ass civic, but Im workin on it. Nothing meant by it. Sorry if I offend, not my intention.

Now, the tube, yes, not smooth on the inside, but, there is still plenty of flow into the filter, and it takes air from the front of the car, away from the engine, and up to the filter. So your basically making a snorkel type air source for your short intak so it get cold air.

I'll try and get a picture up, that might help explain better. You're right its not a smooth flow, but its better than hanging your filter open next to your distributor and head.

Like I said, it works pretty well, and its a cheap hold over until a real intake can be built.

so how is improving your intake system ricin'? That's improving performance, not adding stickers. So that's not ricin'.
And disrupted air flow = bad. Inside of that tube = air disrupter. :)

So does that mean if I attempt to install an awesome audio system to win audio show, I will be considered a ricer?

AAAGGGHHH!!! NOOOO!!!
Look the ricer comment...I take it back. Sorry.
It was a generic term that I applied to myself as my car at the moment is a POS. When the only thing you can afford is the cheap stuff and a rough tube for an intake....oh forget it. Im sorry I said anything about ricing

make you a deal though? I stop usin' ricin' and all related terms...you guys don't get so touchy about it? (there are other newbies too, just lookin out for my fellow greenhorns)

Here's some pictures of my intake, the best pics I could get without taking the bumper off, not a fun task. Hope this helps to explain what I was talking about.

Again, its not the best - by far - but it works pretty good, and it'll keep you under $60 for everything, the air comes in throught the left grill, you can see it, but it's cut out behind the cover, goes right into the tube.

hey civicHBsi91 - I like the color on your car! :)

Intake tube from auto-zone: $32
Filter from Auto-Zone: $25
Dryer Flex tube from Home Depot: $3.49
Dryer tube connector from Home Depot: $1.39

Auto Paint (optional) $16.50

That's about how much it all cost. See, pretty cheap.

(sorry I couldnt think of a "priceless" line to add after...feel free

it might be a better idea to me if the funnel coming from the fender covered up the entire fender. as it is, most of the air is still coming from the under the hood since that funnel thing only cover about half the filter. the filter has no reason to suck air out of that hose in my opinion. the whole disrupted air thing shouldnt be too much of a problem since the air still has to go through the filter, which im sure doesnt contribute to a smooth airflow. on a lighter note, though, it is painted to match the car. good job:D

No, you're right, it does look like shit - you should have seen it before I painted it. The other end - that you can't see - is molded (bent) to fit the size of the left grill.

I'm sure with a better tube and filtering system, it might work out pretty good for some of you. Just a thought.

did I mention its under $60? j/k

what would happen if you put another cone over the intake and connected it. ? better air flow? forced air?

pay no attention to the people who say its a dumb idea. i think its a great mod for how low budget it is.
