Sohc Vtec Help

ok i have a 98 sohc vtec head in my room all ported and polished valve job blah blah blah. i'm just making sure that everything is a direct bolt on. is there any web sites that give some step by step instructions?? and what kind of pistons and rods would be go to put in there. i am using my si block. one more ? i am pretty set on getting the apex-i vtec controller but don't have all the money right now is it possiable for the car to run minus vtec for a little while or will that be bad??

IM assuming that you're planning on using the PM6 ECU from your Si since you are getting an aftermarket VTEC controller, but to answer your question, yes you can run the engine wihout activating VTEC, but i would suggest not revving it any higher than about 5k rpm because thats when the outer lobes of the cam start to drop off the powerband.

I belive that the head is a direct bolt on, you will have to remove a small oiljet in the middle of the block if it is so equipped, it will be a small brass insert in one of the oil passages. bolt the head straight on and use your Si's intake manifold; you will not have any wires to rerun besides for the VTEC. Since your head is a D16y8 head as opposed to the 92-95 d16z6 head, you can use your stock Si Distributor without any modification. the exhaust manifold should also bolt up.

I asked this question a few weeks ago, but I don't think I got an answer...

Anyways, I have a D16y8 sitting in my garage, working on getting it all cleaned up and prepped for turbo and whatnot. Anyways, I'm going to need to buy a new dizzy for it at some point. Right now, my Si won't start, and I think it may need a whole new dizzy, so my question is, can I buy the dizzy for the y8 and throw it on my A6? I think the y8 dizzy has a few extra sensors, but I was thinking that while I was using it on the A6, I just wouldn't plug them in... Do you think this would work? I just don't want to have to buy a new Si dizzy and a few months down the road buy another one for the y8...

the y8 dizzy will not work...its not that it has extra sensors, its that it has extra 'teeth' (its early, its been awhile since I've thought about this subject...so I cant think of what this is exactly called ;) )....and spins at a different rate and its not going to spark at the right time..

ci5ic, marked is correct the y8 dizzy will not work, you have 2 options at this point. Pick up another a6 dizzy and stick to obd-0, or get a 92-95 non vtec dizzy and convert to obd-1. I would go with option 2 if I were you since you are going to have to get a new dizzy one way or the other.
