CHILL

While I understand why Japanese people don't like to be refered to as Japs, most people in the rest of the world don't and use the term regularly with no idea that it's considered a slur here. Even most Americans don't know why it is. Hell, do you even know?

So, give someone a break and explain it first. And you damned sure shouldn't be making threatening remarks to people.

-just pointing something out- if he used jpn (abb. for japan) it would not sound right "Jpn car owners" ---> Japan car owners?? doesn't make sense. I believe that Jap is abbreviate for japenese ---> Jap car owners" -----> Japanese Car Owners. Makes damn sense to me :)

The reason many people in The States who are of Japanese descent find it offensive basically comes from WWII. We in The States interned our own citizens in camps just because they were of Japanese descent. Jap was used not only as a knickname of sorts, but it also was often used in a derogetory fashion. So, while the word itself may not have been offensive, the way it was being used was and eventually it just wasn't really polite.

OTOH, I think too many people look for too many was to get pissed about things these days (in particular in The States). I've been called a Yank in such a way that I don't think it was meant in an exactly nice way, but I just stood tall and proud.

so what about Chink!!
im chinese, own a chinese takeaway, people use it regularly, IN FRONT OF ME!! but theres a big difference between using it as a short name, and offensively. Most of the time i dont mind, like when they say, 'i just fancied a chinkys'
