Yea so i was driving away from the jiffy lube for my way past due oil change, aprox. 5.5k miles since the last change on regular. Im about three blocks away just needing to pass the light im at to get to the freeway entrance. I get the other side of the street and barely cross that crosswalk when every car infront of me stops, i brake hard and feel the back end start to slide. Thank god i managed to stop in time ... to have the bastard behind me smash into my rear pushing me into the car infront of me. Damage assesment is tomarrow but i know my front muber is fucked, ill throw up some pics once i get em developed and scanned but the top of my bumper caved in towards the radiator and the bottom buckled out. The sides buckled as well. Im guessing i got some damage inside to the radiator since my hood wont open anymore, but hey i wont know till they assess the damage tomarrow. I hope its totaled so i can buy me a prelude like i want.

If the hood, bumper (both), fenders, radiator support is messed up than i would bet that they total it out. I bet that the bumper supports are also gone and who knows what else till you pop the hood to see what all is damaged. For the cost of all those parts, labor and time in a paint booth is probally more than what the car is worth. You'll probally get about $2500-3200 out of it.

man, sorry about your ride...but not really  i know you wanted another car.

mine was a bumper, fender, light, corner light, and raditor. they called it $2200 in damage and totalled.

you know what my vote is for ;)

yea when i asked the insurance adjustor this morning about it being totaled he asked me about the car and was like, "since it has over 200K miles its really going to reduce to the value of the car and make it more likely that its going to get totaled." ... i was secretly say "OMG THANK YOU LORD FOR RIDDING ME OF THIS POS CAR!" ... gotta wait like 6 hours for the assment though to find out for sure.

Lets say if someone hits me and the car is classified as TOTALED and i get like 3500 bucks out of insurance.... is the car still MINE? or do i have to take it to the junkyard and give it to them? what if i wanna keep my car? and fix it? can i keep the 3500 AND THE CAR? and fix it?

Basically what happens when you total your car, is the Insurance buys it from you, in the condition it was in immediately before the accident. They look at a number of factors, including mileage, equipment, condition, etc., to determine the car's value. Then they offer you that amount of money for the car. What YOU need to do is call around to local dealerships, bring in pics if necessary, describe the car and ask what price they would have asked for a car like that. Then get a bunch of these quotes on paper, (throw out the "bad" ones, of course) and take those to your claims adjuster to negotiate for more $$. For example on my 1991 Nissan Sentra, (186,000 miles) they initially offered me $1600. I told them that wasn't enough. They called back, 3 hrs later, and offered me $2300. I ended up turning a profit on that car, after 1.5 yrs and 24,000 miles I earned $300 over what I paid.

State Farm then offered me that I could have the car for an additional $50, because it wouldn't sell for much at auction with those miles and that age. So I took the deal. I sold it to some friends for the same $50, and $700 later it was fixed up back to brand new condition. (Lucky bastards had friends at a body shop.) Now my exSentra is happily putting on more miles.

So remember: negotiate, negotiate, negotiate. Ask how much for you to keep the car. Negotiate on that too. Keep your car clean - it'll total for more (they gave me like $150 bonus for excellent exterior condition for the age, it's black and I had waxed the day before).

Good luck with this, the total process is a miserable one, even with the end result it was not worth it for me.

And as for what car to get now...I say get an Infiniti G20. It's an uncommon car, you won't see 50 people daily with the same thing. It's reliable as all get out, classic looks, comfortable, and safe. But then again I guess I'm biased. :)

so the intial estimate for damage is 1700, which is amazing since thats less then the 80% mark they said i had before i totaled the car. but thats only fixing the front assembly and the head/corner lights. i now have to have the car taken in for a tear down/inspection for more damage since the hood wont open. thats this monday. i figure there gonna find more damage, so i should have the car totaled. Im gonna call around to my local honda dealerships an see what i can get for my car since im gonna be calling about some used deals i saw in the paper yesterday. ill see what they would qoute me for my car and take that in for the assosor to deal with when i get my check.

yea dude i even took it out of the sig. I got pics of it sitting in my camera waiting to be developed. im gonna go waste the last like 5 or 6 pics this weekend at a shindig im goin to so i should have something to scan up tuesday of next week.

ohh and i just got a call from insurance company of the guy that rear ended me. apparently his story is a little diffrent from mine and he said i hit the car infront of me firtst, or something like that trying to put off the blame from himself. yea i straightened that guy out and let him know the truth. he is gonna call the guy infront of me and get his story so maybe that second story will straighten everything out.

Well good luck with that. If it's a no-fault accident for you it might not even affect your insurance price at all. I've got two accidents, no fault, and ins. hasn't gone up at all.

Hope everything works out and you get what the car's worth or more.

BTW this is an important reminder to everyone, of the detrimental effects of tailgating. If you hit the guy in front of you because HE slams on his brakes, it's still your fault in the eyes of the law. Please everybody allow lots of stopping distance just in case. Even if you're in a hurry and he won't let you pass, etc., your car and your life and your insurance record are not worth the possible accident. Thanks and happy/safe driving. ;)

from what i told my insurance guy he said it was a not at fault accident and its not effecting my insurance, i have 1700 bucks in repairs already and thats just the front bumper assembly. i take it in next monday for a teardown inspection and hopefully ill get the next 5 or 600 bucks worth of damage i need to total the car. Ive deceided to get me a lil 92-95 hatch. Vroom Vroom...

*points out that im now a level 1 AF guy*

i spent like 2 hours calling around to every dealership and used lot i could find in the yellow pages. after some dick tried to tell me the 4d wagon was a hatchback ... and after several no but we have a nice 2d coupe ... and to many sorry no we dont see very many hatches i finally found someone with a 92-95 hatch.

its a 95 hatch with 86000 miles on it, good working order with minimal scratches and wear on the bumper, apparently thats rather common with cars from frisco. Asking price is 6900 but he is willing to negotiate. Im gonna see if i can get it for 6 even. does this sound like a decent deal, im gonna go see the car on monday.

BLU CIVIC
12-12-2002, 10:19 PM
i got into an accident with my 91 civic (see avatar) i got spun around in the street and almost over the median. the 21 yr old who went about 10ft to total my car with his 89 cutlass went from a stop sign w/o looking. he managed to drive away with a few chips on his bumper. since i had coilovers, i had to raise my rear wheel to drive home. i went to kelly blue book online and they said that i'd get about $1500 since i dah 200,00+ miles and a dent, and paint coming off my car. suprisingly i was given $2600 and drove a chrystler sebring around for 2 weeks free. i wasn't even hurt and all state gave me $500 for "pain and time"

man i was thinking about all the things that i could have brought for my car with that money

Hey man, there is a 92-95 DX hatch with A/C and some other shit here in napa for $4000, its got 100k miles.

The guys number is either

707-259-0029 or 707-258-2804, I cant remember which. I called him bout it just to see what the price was the other day, but I forgot to ask the year. I can take pics if you want me too, its kind of a teal green.

my rental car reassures my stance that american cars suck.

im currently drivin a dodge intrepid. normally i dont dis on american cars, but why is it they feel the need to make driving a car about the same as a boat!? i swear to gawd, i cant handle cars that long or wide unless it comes with a rear mounted motor and a propeller. GRRR

well i checked out a bunch of civic hatches ... and most being way overpriced i was kinda upset. I did find a sweet 94 prelude im thinking about picking up, but i just found a listing for another civic hatch so im gonna call about that and see the car some time this week. hopfully the prelude wont sell while im checking other hatch leads. my old car is now officially totaled and im waiting to hear back from my insurance about my cars worth for haggling about how much im gonna get ...

i also just put in the pics for development so im gonna see about scanning em up tomarrow ... im gonna have to fiddle with my USB devices to get it to work ... anyways ... ill post pics tomarrow.

well shit ... i get my call this morning at like 9am and there only giving me 2100 for it. so i checked cars.com and faxed them over two civics, a 90 and a 91 going for 4k+ each to raise the price ... as far as im concerned thats just not enough to go buy me a new car. anyways my search for a 92-95 civic hatch now includes maybe a 4th gen si hatch ... fuck man i only got two weeks till school starts and i need this car before then.

there is another way of getting your insurance to give you more money. Tell them to find you a car with just as many miles as your old one with no body damage. they gave me for one of my old cars 500 more than low blue book cause they did not want to find a car for me.

there already giving me the run around ... they want to see an ad or something and not taking my word for it ... so screw them ...

but on to other things ... i just went to take a look at this 90 DX i found ... its got a salvaged title ... im hella bumed about it ... but im wondering what you all think about salvaged title cars ... im thinking about calling AAA and see if i can take it in for a safty inspection ... i think they do that last i remember ... anyways yea just let me know what you all think...

VERY risky. After an accident many cars are NEVER right again. Plus half the time they are not fixed up right, they don't have airbags, new seatbelts, etc. People don't replace the safety equipment because they are cheap. Not to mention the potential reliability problems.

I was driving downhill in a 45 going 43 (I was riding the brake) and an 85yr old guy attempting an illegal left turn across a double yellow pulled out in front of me and stopped. In my lane. I couldn't change lanes, there was a car next to me, so I slammed on the brakes and the horn but with no ABS I went into a skid and hit him. He was ticketed, I wasn't. I was still going about 20-25 at impact. I needed a new bumper, grille, headlight, fender, and hood. I don't know what he needed to fix his car, but I hit him in the rear driver's side wheel so I took out the wheel, axle, door, trunk, bumper, etc. Heh heh.

I sold the car to friends for the $50 that the insurance charged me for it. Then they fixed it back up for only $750. (They have connections.) The car is still being driven which makes me happy 'cause I hate to think of my Sentra sitting in a junkyard getting ripped to pieces.
