OK....I NEED DOME HELP. I'M STILL RELATIVELY NEW TO THE WHOLE GAME OF CUSTOMIZING AND RACING. I'VE BASICALLY MASTERED THE STREET RACING (I.E. DRIVING IN A STRAIGHT LINE AND HOPING NOT TO HIT ANYTHING AND VICE VERSA) BUT I WANT TO BROADEN MY HORIZON WITH DIFFERENT DRIVING TECHNIQUES. I INSTANTLY FELL IN LOVE WITH DRIFTING. I'VE SAY NUMEROUS VIDEOS OF CARS IN JAPAN DRIFTING IN THE STREETS AND NOW I WANT TO KNOW HOW TO DO IT. I'VE GOT A LINK TO DIFFERENT DRIFTING TECHNIQUES AND THE DANCE ( http://www.geocities.com/df001356/heeltoe.html ). WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IS THERE ANYONE HERE THAT KNOW HOW TO DRIFT...IF SO, CAN YOU GIVE ME SOME POINTERS. ALSO, IS THERE ANYONE RELATIVELY CLOSE TO NORFOLK, VA THAT COULD POSSIBLY GIVE ME A LESSON OR RECOMMEND ME TO SOMEONE OR SOMEPLACE??

Drifting is tough with FWD cars. Most of those videos are of RWD JDM cars we don't have at our disposal here in the states.

Buy some old beater Chevette or something and toss a big motor in it and drift 'til your heart's content. Actually, some nasty old RWD car with a long wheelbase would probably be the easiest :( - That is the only pointer I have for you ;)

It's really hard to do in a FWD. All I can suggest is maybe some sticky tires up front on small rims, and then some crappy tires in the back with bigger heavier rims (more weight in the back helps bring out the back). Then get a rear antisway bar and adjust it to the stiffest setting and the back should kick out pretty damn easy. I go drifting when it snows for practice but other than that I don't want to fuck up my tires and stuff.

FROM THE INFO THAT I'VE SEEN, IT KINDA SAID THAT IT WAS MAINLY FWD CARS DOING DRIFTING.

MAN, IT SEEMS LIKE EVERYONE KNOWS HOW TO DRIFT EXCEPT ME

Most cars that drift good are RWD...like the AE84, 240's, 300ZX's anything RWD basically.

the thing about drifting in a fwd is either you start drifting and the front end starts to push straight or the back end wants to come all the way around. I saw a vid once of the guys in japan doing it, they were yanking the e-brake and locking the rear wheels.

is your caps lock key stuck?

from everything i've heard drifting is hard in a FWD car. I've never tried and probably wont in my civic.

YOU CAN DO IT IN FWD BUT YOU CAN'T DO MUTIPLE TURNS, SO I GUESS THAT'S WHY A LOT OF PEOPLE STAY AWAY FROM FWD

Ive tried a couple of times in empty parking lots but thats about it cause im scared of breaking traction and crashing.

Wait till mdnnccivicrcr comes on here, he used to drift his 90ex sedan and now is able to drift his 94 plymouth acclaim (which is pretty damn hard considering the ebrake is a foot pedal on the left)

I KEEP GOING TO ALL THESE WEB SITES AND SOME OF THE SAY YOU CAN'T AND SOME SAY YOU CAN, BUT SAY IT'S NOT REAL DRIFTING. IS IT BETTER TO START PRACTING IN THE RAIN, SNOW, OR DRY WAETHER OR ON A MILE LOND DIRT ROAD WITH CURVES?

i find the wet is the best.... not that i can really do it lol like the guys say its really hard in a FWD car involves using the uh what u guys call the e-brake a lot.... an easy way to start is find a big empty parking lot... quickly accelerate then yank the hand brake uh e-brake turn a bit and keep the power on but dont turn too much .... works for a bit but not long hehe

NO MY CAPS LOCK ISN'T STUCK, JUST HAVE TO USE IT ALL DAY AT WORK, CAN'T USE LOWERCASES, PLUS IT'S HOW I WRITE.

IS IT THE SAME AS PULLING UP UR PARKING BREAK AND SWING YOUR BACK END AROUND??

Drifting is not possible in fwd cars, the reason why is because in drifting you have your back tires spinning like crazy so that the back end slides around a corner. In a fwd car you don't have your back tires to spin to push you around the corner like you're supposed to. There is e-brake drifting but that's not drifting, that's dragging your ass around a corner. You pull your ebrake and what happens? That's right, the back tires lock up and you're dragging the ass end of your car. That's bad for two reasons, well more than two, but because you're sliding your tires on the same spot of the tire causing ware and tear on only one spot of the tire. And two, when you're "drifting" around a corner with your ebrake on, you're losing speed and force. So it is not drifting in a fwd car, it's dragging your ass. Whereas in a rwd car, your back tires are spinning and pushing you around the corner at the same time that it's sliding the ass end around. I've drifted lots of things, from camaros to SUVs. I have tried playing around in many fwd cars and you can still do it, but it sucks really bad. I can do it to where it's almost as good as drifting a rwd car, but still it's not cool. When people are watching, they see you pull the ebrake and the back end of the car goes down due to pulling the ebrake while still going and it looks stupid. The best place to start practicing is on snow because it's really easy to slide your ass around, so easy that you can do it sometimes without the ebrake. You won't learn much on there because it is so incredibly different than dry pavement. Next is on gravel, it's getting a little closer but is still very different. Then move up to wet pavement, that's probably the closest thing you'll get to that compares to regular drifting. But if you're really excited about this drifting thing and you want to get into it, definately get a rwd car. Just buy a rwd car for a few hundred without a motor, drop a bigger motor into it and play until your heart is conent.

I tried drifiting a couple of times in my old 73mgb gt which was RWD, but was never able to do it on the dry, only wet cause it had less torque than my civic.

As far as other RWD vehicles in my family, I dont think its a good idea to go drifiting in a 98 chvey silverado truck or a 91 4WD ford bronco.

i read somewhere that if you perss your gas and brakes at the same time it will lock your rear wheels. so couldn't go into a turn like that?

You're applying your brakes and then when you press on your accelerator you're just overriding your front brakes and the back ones are still locked. So you're just overriding your front brakes. And even if you do that, you're still dragging your ass around the corner instead of sliding/pushing your car around the corner like rwds do. And in your sig take out the "." and put a "/" before the second IMG

ok, in your sig, put the "/" after the "[" and before the "I" and take the "."s out and you'll have it :)

Seeing how 4th gens have drum brakes in the rear they rarely lock up and applying the gas and brake at the same time wouldn't lock the rear wheel up. Normally at autocross i end up drifting a few times on accident. I just get carried away and go into corners too fast and i loose the back end.

thought about making it a hobby or trying to perfect it with my car, i guess i might be better off just playing aroud with it

weight balancing and minimal body roll is really the only way to drift in a hatch, me and my friend do it easily in his hatch all 4 strut bars anti sway bars front and rear and coilovers with a 4 inch drop in the front and about a 2.8-3 in the back for some reason when accelrating this has the best weight balance and we can drift around corners without the e-brake...the only thing he uses his e-brake for is burnouts at the drags or when the car is parked haha.

4 STRUT BARS?? I ONLY HAVE 2 ON THE TOP IN THE FRONT AND REAR. DO YOUR HAVE YOURS ON THE BOTTOM AS WELL?? I THOUGHT THAT ANTI-SWAY BARS WERE STRUT BARS......WHAT ARE ANTI-SWAY BARS??

all i have to say it" that was fun :ylsuper i was weaving in and out of cones (for this to be my first time, i didn't hit a single cone), had smoke coming from my tires. the only thing is that i have to learn everything. the braking, the shifting and using the gas. man i was actually going sideways with my tires spinning and i'm not talking about pulling up my parking brake and doing a semi-circle. that was cool. think i might want to get into autocross, makes street racing look weak now (even though i still might do it from time to time)

question: so if i decide to take up autocross...would it be a waste of time for me to get a body kit for my car??
