Brake changing question

Hi all,

Getting ready to change the front rotors and pads and back pads this weekend.

When I changed the brakes on the wife's BMW a while back I followed these instructions:

Should I do the follow step for my 02 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Coupe as well?

"Apply a liberal amount of anti-squeal compound to the new pads in the area where they will contact the caliper and piston (use the old pads as a template)."

and then with suggestions from this board I also bedded the new brake pads on the BMW. Do I need to do that for the Pontiac as well?

I see there isn't a brake rotor/pad changing in the Tips and Maintenance forum. Is there an external documented procedure someone can recommend?

Maybe the reason there is no procedure :dunno: in the Tips & Maint directory is because of the ease GM's great design of changing out the front/rear pads & rotors on 97-03 GPs. IMO, what a cake job to swap out pads & rotors on the GP!
Experience wise, in my case on my 98 & 99 GPs, I found the pads with out anti-squeal compound on the piston side of the pads and installed the new ones the way I found the old ones installed. The FSM says you're supposed to burnish the rears after new ones are installed, but I didn't bother and haven't experienced any squealing noises.

Here is one for upgrading to Powerslot rotors but can be used as a guide for doing a basic brake job on the '97-'03 model Grand Prix. Specifies bolt sizes and tools needed, etc.

Got everything swaped out on the front, new pad and rotors. It was pretty easy, but those bolts were freaking hard to loosen. That part wasn't fun at all.

Going to do the rear pads next weekend.

1/2 inch breaker bar is usually the ticket to get the caliper to steering knuckle bolts loose on the front. On the rear, you are pretty much limited to a 1/2 inch ratchet at most due to clearence issues and not being able to turn the wheels.
