Should I replace engine on a 2005 Envoy?

I have a 2005 Enovy XL SLT, 6 cyl with 70929 miles on it. I've kept the maintenance up, changed the oil on time, no heavy towing or off-roading.

The engine light came on and I took to the dealer. Their diagnosis was low compression in cylinder #4. Now they're recommending replacing the engine with a re manufactured one. The reason for doing this is they'll probably have to pull the engine to get at the last two bolts anyway plus they might break some bolts getting at the problem. Also to save labor costs.

First of all, does this sound right and secondly, has anyone else had a problem like this on a 3 year old Envoy with those kind of miles?

Thanks for your help.

Welcome to AF. This sounds like an overkill here, what is wrong with the old one, what is the diagnosis, a new engine is verrrrry expensive. I think they are gun shy here to dig into this and see what's wrong.

I'm skeptical of that "diagnosis." Check your gasoline filler cap for starters. Is it loose or worn? Letsee, we're talking about a XL. Some of them have developed cracks where the gas filler neck meets the fuel tank. Fuel system vac leaks are often the cause of the SES light coming on.

How is it running? This seems very drastic for such low miles. Mine has 178K on it.

hello. i'm curious. even if you did have to get a new engine, wouldn't it be covered under warranty? after all, it is powertrain...

That does seem very early for an engine replacement on the Atlas Inline 6. I have 106,500 miles on mine- it was also included in the 2001-2002 special policy adjustment for defective cylinder liners- and I havent had any problems with my engine. You dont hear about the 4.2's going bad too often unless, early on in production, a cylinder liner falls...

Interested if it was a misfire code that was retrieved...

And if it were me, I'd buy a low mile used engine and find an independent engine shop to install it IF it is in fact a bad engine....

What the hell would a gas cap or filler tube have to do with low compression in cylinder #4? Please shut up.

You might want to calm down yourself since you just answered a thread that is almost 2 years old!:disappoin
