Most likely your head gasket. Stop driving it and get it fixed or you will really damage your engine.

What color was the smoke? How long did it stay in the air, the reason I ask is if it was blue and hung around it would be oil, if it was white andacted like steam Brian is right STOP USING THE MOTOR!! Dont even start it, it can be severly damaged. mine broke a rod and went through the block just idling.
Compression checks, water in the oil or oil in the water, over heating problems.

Check other post here they are loaded with great info on this problem.

Absolutely, white exhaust means you're burning coolant, which typically means blown head gasket, or worse, a cracked head.
Gray exhaust is usually due to burning oil, while black means you're running rich.

Its Your Engines HEAD GASKET, known especially with the 3.0 L 4Runner engine, mine went a few years back. Get it fixed asap and do NOT drive your 4Runner till it's fixed. I hope your engine hasn't been damaged because of this.

Good Luck
