Startup Oil Pressure/Oil filter: Follow Up

Hey guys, a while ago I posted a thread regarding TBI engine startup and how I don't like how it revs the engine right at the engine fire. I also included that my truck knocked and rattled during that initial rev until the oil pressure kicked up. It was mentioned that sometimes something as simple as an oil filter can cause engine noise. In a recent oil change I went from Fram to A/C Delco. Let me tell you, what a difference! Oil pressure kicks up almost instantly as opposed to the solid 1.5 seconds with no oil pressure and the engine noise at that initial rev is gone. A/C Delco every time from here on out in all of my GM vehicles!

Hahaha thanks. Yeah, I've been going with A/C Delco in terms of replacement parts since before I've even had my license, but I never thought something as simple as a filter could make such a difference. I guess I was wrong.

It has to do with the fact that Fram uses cardboard and plastic to construct their anti-drainback valve - as a result, the anti-drainback feature doesn't really work. On the bad side, this causes noise at startup, and can lead to component failure. On the positive side, it makes oil changes a little cleaner since there's not so much oil coming down out of the block when you remove the filter ...

I had used a Fram a couple of years back, even filled it with oil before I installed it. Man, the oil light took a while to go out. Since then I read up on them here and have gone back to Delcos. There are also 2 tiers of Fram filters, the ones they sell to the "Mart stores has a slightly different part number to it. Probably made a lot cheesier all in the name of corporate greed!

That would explain why it takes so much less time to get oil pressure at startup. I'll take the messier oil change any day if it's better for the engine!

wixs and napa filters are my choice due to there good filtration. a/c delco a close second. fram it's a sad filter.

i just get teh filters for my caprice from the local dealer or walmart since they carry the delco filters too.

NAPA filters are made by Wix, good quality filters. AC Delco are good quality as well, but the Purolator Pure One filters have the best first pass filtration ratings, with a high quality anti-drainback valve. Make sure it's a Pure One as they also have a cheapie line.
