Your post has been moved from Tips & Maintenance to the regular Grand Prix forum for discussion.

send me a private message with the last 8 digits of your vin, and I can tell you what factory stereo you have. Since you have the 4 speakers in the rear, it's a good bet that you have the Bose system with the separate amp.

I believe the bose amplified system has 4 rear round (cant rmemeber the size) speakers, vs. the non bose system has just two rear 6x9's.

You are correct on the speakers tblake, the 4 rear speakers indicate the upgrade sound system. He has the option code UQ3 in his options list from his VIN (he pm'ed me), which denotes the extended range sound system with low frequency amp. I may have mistakenly stated "Bose" in my original response, because I don't think the actual "Bose" named system was available until later models. His is the UQ3 extended sound system with the CD/EQ radio (UP3), and separate low requency amp.

be carefull, I hear trying to interface an aftermarket deck with these stock amps can be quite troublesom without the proper adapter from best buy (100 bucks last time I saw one).

my grand prix came stock with two 6x9s and two 4 inch rounds in the rear as well as two 5.25s and two tweeters in the front, but contrary to what has been stated, i do not have a seperate amp. the amp is just the one that is located on the back of the in-dash. and for an aftermarket in-dash install, the cheapest way, the way i chose, was to cut and rewire the indash to your stock harness, saving the money spent on an adapter. no problems with mine

yes, but you cut the factory wires. I myself, if I were to ever install an aftermarket deck, it would have to be easily reversable, and to me isnt worth snipping up factory wires. Im just happy with my stock cd player, and dont see the need for aftermarket. They dont look good IMO, and the ones that do dont light up with red illumination. Plus they have such small buttons and are not very user friendly when driving 70mph on the freeway. The stock one is so much more practical and does everything I need it to.

I agree Tblake. I had a Kenwood given to me because of the common issue they have of the cable that drives the motorized face went bad and it quit working. I bought the cable for $10 and the wiring and install kit for $25. I had it in there for only a month and didn't like it. It has switchable red/green button illumination, but as you stated, it looked cheesy and teh itty bitty buttons are impossible to find and use in the dark, especially with gloves on (winter gloves, not Racer ricer gloves, ) I fixed the display backlight on my factory unit and put it back in, much happier.
TDWPgtp, your's is the first that I've heard of with the 4 rear speakers and no factory amp. Would you mind sending me a PM with the last 8 digits of your car's VIN# so I can verify what option code that would be?

i also would have left the stock indash, if it worked and had a cd player. it was just a cassette so i upgraded to the alpine cda-x001 which has large enough buttons and is very nice. i will send u the numbers later today when i get the chance to go out and look.

I also fix the deck too, that I can change the harness connector for a different car or truck. I use crimp connectors on the radio harness and the car harness.

crimp connectors arent so good. Keep in mind that years or driving and vibrations could cause them to come apart.

So far I yet to have a problem with doing the harness this way. I have installed quit a few systems this way and no one has ever come back with intermitant problems. But this doesn't mean that it can't happen.
