Master Modellers

Being relatively new to modelling and doing a bit of reseacrh I have come accross web sites belonging to proclaimed master modellers. My question is this? How is this term derived in this art form of modelling is it an informal title recognised by peers or are there recognisable milestones completd where one takes on this recognition. Or is it self proclaimed as a result of universal recognition of someones work. It just interests me in that the level and complexity of some of the modelling builds I have seen is spectacular and they really are like artists.

There are at least 2 ways of understanding the term "Master modeller" IMO

1. A modeler who makes the original "masters" (prototype) of a scale car that are then copied and turned into the molds for production. Usually a very skilled modeler who is well versed in various building and scratch building techniques.

2. A modeler of exceptional skill. Usually their builds will be characterized by intricate detail, accuracy with respects the original 1/1 car, many modified and scratch built additions and beautiful painting. Many times it is difficult to distinguish between a photo of their model and a real car. The "title" master modeler is usually thrust upon them by their peers - IMO most (but not all ;) ) of the people here on AF that I would put into this category wouldn't feel very comfortable with calling themselves that :)

For modelers who make their living from accepting commissioned builds, I would say it is normal and understandable marketing to cal themeselves Master Builders - especially if theyt have a bunch of competition awards to support that claim.

Take a look through the WIP sections and you will soon learn to recognize who are worthy of your calling Master Builders in both senses of the word ;)

i agree too...basically there's no rule as to who can be called a master modelor.

for me, as long as that particular modelor did something on the model which i know i can't do it...that's a master modelor to me.

In most highly skilled trades, masters take on apprentices. How much of that is there in scale modeling of the sort that's discussed on AF? (Not architectural modeling or building miniatures for the movie industry.)
