Passenger Seat 99 Chevy Veture

Okay Here Is My Problem. The Front Passenger Seat Will Not Recline Forward Or Backward. It Doesn't Have A Lever Like Most Vehicles, It Has A Knob That You Turn To Make It Recline Or Set Upright. It Is Reclined Back And I Cant Get It To Set Back Straight. If Anyone Knows Anything That Could Help Please Let Me Know. Me And My Pregnant Wife Would Greatly Appreciate It.

This is the same exact tricky problem that I had on my 99 and was never able to find any explanation or standard fix. I was told the mechanism was not serviceable and the seat needed to be replaced. But I did figure out how to fix it. I removed the seat from the vehicle and placed it on my kitchen table. Looking at the rear mechanism, you can see a shaft which traverses the lower back of the seat where it pivots. You can't remove this shaft since it is all stamped in place which is why it is not "servicable", but with a little ingenuity you can easily fix it. On this shaft are the various gears, washers, spacers, grommets, etc that enable the seat to recline and return using the knob. It appeared to me that the gears would not "sync" because some spacer (probably plastic) had broken and was missing, since if I pryed in between some of the parts on the shaft, I could bring the gears back in sync. It's MUCH easier to see and understand all of this than to describe it. Just take a screwdriver and pry in various places and you will see that you can easily slide everything back into place. The trick is keeping it in place. To make a long story short, I had to make some kind of spacer to force and hold the gears back into sync. I don't remember exactly what I used and I don't have the car anymore, but I recall experimenting with different thicknesses of wire, and I believe what finally worked was a type of very stiff fencing wire about 1/8" thick whick I bent around the shaft into a ring shape. It wasn't hard to fix, it didn't take long, and still worked perfectly when I got rid of the vehicle a long while later. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
