Bluebird Auto Gear Change Probs?????

Hi, i have a 1992 bluebird with automatic transmission it has a 1998 cc sr20 petrol engine but from pull away to the first gear change it doesent change smoothly ,it seems to drop heavy or bang into gear ,every other gear change after that seems fine,
Does anyone have any ideas ???????????
