"dead" alternator?

Driving home tonight, headlights dimmed and "check engine" light came on. Voltage guage read about 12 volts, normally 14 constant. I figure that the alternator went, or the regulator. I have a 95' Wrangle 2.5, auto. I looked tonight and noticed a "box" bolted to the rear, bottom of the alternator. What is this? Regulator?

That "block was nothing more than a connector. I did replace the alternator with a higher amp. 75 went to 90. All seems to be working well. Doing this upgrade, will it affect anything else in the jeep, or just have more power ability to run other accessories?
