Help identify voyager tranny?!

I have a 1996 grand voyager with a growling transmission. I ordered a used transmission from afew states away and it is different. They say it is right and my van is wrong. Can any one help me identify it. It is a recent reman from a wrecked van. I would like to resale it if I can identify it.

There are only two transaxles used in thses vans, but many versions of each. The 4 speed (a604/41te) had a rectangular box just above the oil pan with a multi-pin electrical socket on it. The 3 spd does not. Other than that you will need the transmission s/n which is engraved in the gasket surface next to the transfre gear cover.

Thanks for the info, I can at least tell they are both 4 speeds. I did find a number next to the gasket surface, 345404, and I am guessing on the last number 4. Or are you meaning that I need to remove the pan to see the s/n.

That doesn't look like the number you need or you do not have all of it. It should start with a 4 and it is locater on the flange for the cover of the transfer gears next to the output speed sensor. Or if you are looking at the cover it would be an the left side just above a tab on the cover that you use to tie the harness to. I could scan a picture but it doesn't look like you can post pictures without a URL. It should have about 15 digits. the first 7 are the p/n that tells you the year and what transfer gears and diff ratio it has, the next four are the build date than the last are the number in sequence the trans was.

You have gave great instructions. I can just barely see what I think are numbers (made with a series of dots) on the gasket surface where you described. Does this sound right to you? It looks like I will have to remove the gear cover to read the numbers. I will need to talk to the people I bought it from before I do that. (I think they should refund my money if I can prove it is the wrong tranny)

Please respond and let me know if I am on the right track. Will I need to call a dealer with those numbers, or will you be able to run them for me.

Yes, those are the numbers. I should be able to look up and tell you what year, transfer gears and diff ratio and what engine it was for.

I think if you clean the area well enough you will be able to see all of the numbers. The book I have goes up to 2002.

I can't see the whole number, without removing the cover. They don't want me to remove the cover if I can find out it will work any way.

I will describe mine a little viewing from the front. On the lower driver side there is a sensor that points straight up. Just above it and pointing forward (next to the serial number) is another.

The the tranny that I bought, It has two sensors on the lower front drivers side, one pointing straight forwar and one angle outward. And it does not have the one pointing straight up in the same area. The connecters are different as well, similar in size but different number of pins. Other wise the trannys are the same looking.

They told me to remove the pan to get the numbers. Here they are:
PK456762323321090. If any one can run these numbers I sure would appreciate it.

The trans you have is pre 96. In 96 they changed the PRNDL switch and it eliminated the two switches your new trans has. However, the change was 6-5-95 which means that some 96 vehicles had it. The Chrysler 41TE/AE factory manual shows 1996 up to 6-5-95 for a 3.3L v6 2.49:1 final ratio, with transfer gears of 49 Teeth/47 Teeth and diff gears 17/59.

So, they may have sold you a trans from a 1996, but an early 1996 with the early PRNDL switch. You could probably modify your harness to fit the early configuration but I wouldn't. They should have asked for the numbers from your transaxle first. There were so many changer made to these so the only wat to know for sure is to verify the numbers.

My 97 Grand Caravan has a transaxle from late 96.
