i know that a CIA doesnt do much. i was being sarcastic. my friend has a 97 accord(same one that f'd the motor and tranny) with an intake. it's auto...he still lost to my neon(and i had only a 3spd auto.
and yes the CIA can make up tonnes of shit

CAI really can make a difference because some manufacturers create very restrictive intakes, and an aftermaket one usually frees up a lot mroe airflow, but with out platform the mitsubishi intake box is pretty well designed for its time, so even an aftermarket CAI will give you at most 2-3 hp.

The most you could possibly see out of an intake would be about 20HP. That would mostly likely be on a high flowing N/A engine with a restrictive stock intake.
Most cars will see about 5HP at the most. That's not a lot IMO.

Here is the thing.. Just an intake Will do hardly anything (like what you all are saying) However If you do other mods It incresses.. like stock boost on a VR4 with an intake will add ,lets just say, 5HP... ok now throw on a downpipe and gut the cats.. the intake just added 3-8hp on top of the 5 it had before (the downpipe also added power but where not counting that) then you turn the boost up to 15 psi... the intake just got more 2-6 hp on top of what it was before!...
I mean jump down the line lets say I dont go speed density and I leave my stock intake on the car and I am running 30psi... dino that and put on a intake and you will for sure get more then 20hp

well, on a turbo, ram air doesnt really do anything. your getting whatever PSI the turbo can hold into the intake regaurdless. The only benefit would be the decreased temp.
but on a n/a youll probably notice a little difference. The way i would do it would be to run plumbing to where the passenger intercooler is on a turbo. You can probably modify the tube that comes off the box stock.

I would dissagree.. It's like putting a cold air intake on a turboed car.. Its not going to help any.. as soon as the air reaches the turbo Its going to get hella hot...

I hate to break it to you but cold air intakes on turbo cars are beneficial, even though the turbo makes the air "hella hot".
The change in temp is going to be basically the same, but if you start out with cooler air, you end up with cooler air.

While I do agree with you about the fact that turbo-charged cars can benefit from an intake but I don't think the increase would be as dramatic as an N/A car. Also, the air charge would NOT basically be the same temp. Air going straight into a throttle body will be a lot cooler than air hitting a turbo that can spin at over 100,000 RPM. You do know that turbos will glow red when being pushed much like a set of headers. Engines run at "roughly" 200° F while EGT can be anywhere between 1,000° to 1,600° F.
Big difference. That's why we have intercoolers.

Sure if you are driving around not getting on it at all then sure you might have cooler air But if you are on it (witch is the point of having the upgrades IMO) The turbo is going to be hot like polly said around 1000°.. 10° cooler air is not going to make a differance..

well you all were talking about cold air intakes, and i was curious about the ram air. i was wondering why people say they have ram air with the box.. to me it would make the most sense to get like a cone filter and run tubing from somewhere into the filter. not the box.
so, i guess it's a little off topic, yet still pertains to the "air intake" subject started on page 5.

no, not really a specific temperature you wanna be at...just 'the colder the better'.
if you were to Dyno a car 100*, then Dyno it at 60*, the 60* dyno will show a power increase. (all other things staying the same).
colder air is denser, meaning you can fit more air into a cylinder, meaning the ECU will give give more fuel to the cylinder, meaning more power.
thats the basic idea of a CAI. It tries to intake air from outside (~80*) instead of the air in the engine compartment (~160*)
(temps just for the sake or argument)
(this is also why there are systems that spray cold water on the intercooler, and part of the reason nitrous oxide adds power)

well, you just want it to flow as freely as possible and try to take air from outside rather than the engine bay. Thats the idea of this
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/1/web/2257000-2257999/2257593_41_full.jpg
it kind of walls off the hot air from the engine bay.
as far as being 'worth it' or not...i guess that depends on your budget and mod level.

1. Its good to know that you don't think the increase will be as dramatic as an N/A car, but in reality it should be equal to or better than an NA car
2. I never said the air charge going in would be the same temp as the air coming out of the turbo. What I said was cooler air going in leads to cooler air coming out. So if you are taking in 100* air and the turbo adds 100* to the air then you end up with 200* air. If you drop the intake air down to 70* the turbo won't have to work as hard to achieve the same pressure, so the additional temp would be less than before and you would have a difference of more than 30*(lower) in air temp coming out of the turbo.
3. The temp increase coming from the turbo has almost nothing to do with the RPM's of the turbo or EGT's through the turbo. The added temperature comes almost completely from the air being compressed.
4. Your engine runs at many different temperatures depending on where you are looking. So saying that your engine runs at 200* isn't quite accurate since that is merely the temp of your coolant. Also something to note, since you are under the impression that the intake air gets heated by the exhaust going through the turbo: The CHRA on the turbo is oil cooled. The oil spends far more time, per volume, in the turbo than air does by orders of magnitude. If the oil was to go over 250-260* it would break down extremely quickly, and need to be replaced.

the box is aluminum. i got it from Ultimate Performance...but i would save your money and make your own. It needed to be modified anyways to fit.
ooh yeah i like that idea- thats easier then i was thinking actually. when i said embossed i should have explained that i was thinking of heating the plastic and pulling it down over a mold of the emblem so it would stick up like 2 inches from the surface of the plastic but i dunno how much room you have above so it might not have worked anyway. ill just sand the plastic to do a frosted look. how thick is that material? or how thick do you want it?
yea, i definitely dont have clearance for anything that sticks up. my hood actually touches the box already. I believe it's 1/8", but it may be 3/16". either will work.
For the emblem...your talking about leaving the rest clear and just having the emblem 'sanded', right? can you do it on the underside, so the top remains smooth?
if you need to change your price because it's more work than you originally thought, just let me know.
