Just wondering if any HK GT-R owners are on this board. I may have an job opportunityin Hong Kong starting in January and wanted to know what prices GT-Rs are going for over there. (R32, R33 and R34s) Also, what is insurance like over there for a 23 year old male?

I own a R34 GTR Vspec 2 in HK. If you are 23, don't even have to think about getting the insurance for this car. All the Skyline are black listed by the insurance companies. I didn't expect that when I bought my car. I am 29 and my driving record would suppose to deserve 60% discount on the insurance. However, none of the insurance company would sell me the insurance. They said it wasn't me, it was the car. The Skyline simply had too much claims over the pass several years. I thought it was non sense. Anyways, I finally got an insurance company to sell me the insurance, but it costed me 3850 USD per year including only 40% discount instead of 60% discount.
The car itself is about the same px as the US depends on if it's a new car or old car. I got my car brand new for about 90,000USD. It's quite hard to find a used R34 GTR there. You can get a used R33 GTR for about 30,000 USD or less.

I had no idea how much pricier the GTR's were than in other countries. Now I wouldn't feel so bad buying a Motorex car! (if I could afford $90K)How much are R32s? Is insurance a requirement in Hong Kong? If it is, I hope I can luck out and get an R33 or R32. Looks like I might have to stick to the subways and ferries:(

R32 would cost about 12K to 15K USD now. It's quite difficult to find a good condition one there nowaday. For the insurance, it is required. No matter what kind of Skyline you are buying....doesn't matter if it's a R32 or 33 or GTS or GTR. As long as it has the word "Skyline", they just black list it. I don't know if you have been to Hong Kong before. Just to give you an idea of what else you have to consider to own a car there. Gas price - Fill up the tank of a Skyline would be about 77 USD. Fill up a tank of the Mercedes S class would be about 128 USD. Parking - Renting a parking space to park your car would cost you at least 250 to 300USD a month depending where you want to park your car. Park your car in the public parking for movies or dinner or shopping, the average hourly rate is about 3USD per hour, but you have to pay a minimum of 2 hours. License for the Skyline - Yearly charge about 1028 USD. Also, you have to consider the maintainence etc etc etc.......If you do have a chance to work there, I will say you stay calm in the first 6 months and get used to the living standard there first cuz it's not cheap. Then you consider getting a car. When you go there, send me an email. I will see if I am there. If so, I can take your out with my car.

I have been to HK many times on buisness and on each trip I stayed for about 10 days or so. All I can say is, and please, no offense to anybody,it's my personal opinion, that HK is a shitty place to be in! The cost of living is so high but of course the income per capita is also high and the income tax is very low. However, the things which you need to pay for are many and almost all of them bleed your pocket. If I to work there and I earn less than 1m HK$ per month, I would not even by a car let alone a Skyline.
Hell, come and work in Malaysia! The pay is not that high and the GTR, although it is expensive to buy, is really cheap to run. Fuel is about US 0.30 per liter. Insurance (comprehensive cover) is about USD900 and road tax is about USD500 per year. Parking is about USD0.30 per hour at public parking.

Good call, Initial_E, I think I would take it easy for awhile and stick to the Metro and the ferries. I'll just wait 'til I'm your age and buy it a new one, just like you did;) I've been to Hong Kong a few times, I just had no idea owning a car there could be so expensive. I know the gas prices are high. It's similar in Japan not to mention some parts of Europe. As for insurance, I would have expected it to be high, just not impossible! Of course, HK doesn't have it as bad as Singapore (150% import tax, let alone other expenses, yikes!). R33, I've never been to Malaysia, but I'd like to visit next time I'm in Asia.

Wow, is this offer open to any of us too? If so, I may have to join my gf on her trip back to HK in October! :D

Was wondering, where in HK can you really stretch the legs on such a beast? I mean, are there any really long stretches of road that where you can just open it up? Just curious....

Medici and everyone, if ever you are coming to M'sia, give me advance notice. We can go for a ride in my GTR if you want. If it coincides with my track day, hell, we can go to the track together and you can sample my grandma's driving!:D Just the other weekend, my friend with the TO4R GTR brought 3 fellows who flew from GB to the track. They did not want to go back!!:D

Hey R33, you have to look after me too. I have friends living in KL and I might visit them next year. You got to give me a ride too.:D

R33
09-27-2001, 10:38 PM
Sky, on the DTS dyno, the car recorded 524.2 hp on all 4s. Straight away speed? Gee...I dunno....haven't the gut to try yet! The tuners tried it in S'pore early one morning. They said they hit 302kph. I can tell you this much. The Srepang F1 track has 0.9 km of straight (the front straight). Prior to this mods, I got 218kph (running at 375rwhp then) with the rear wing unadjusted - less restriction. The other wekend, running at just 1.25 bar, - and coming out of the hairpin before the straight in similar way as before ie at 60kph in 2nd - I got 230 kph at about the same braking point with the rear wing fully adjusted for downforce. That's all I could tell from first hand experience.
Initial, you are of course included but you have to take me for a ride in your 911 Turbo and R34 when I am in HK!:D

Sky: yes, I am using the stock tranny. Still holding up with no sign of stress. Apparently the 33 tranny hold up better to big power than the Getrac 6 in the 34. It could hold up to 650 hp (some even say 700hp). BTW, what are doing with the car right now?
Initial : no, you are not gonna get away that easily. I will go to Canada one of these days!:D

Hiya Folks,

I am moving to HK in two weeks and the first thing I want to do is buy a R34. Can anyone recommend a good garage? Also I am selling my UK car:

Brought R34 in March 2001 (UK price plus VAT)
Upgraded to 400BHP with MH in March/April
Upgraded to 550BHP with MH in May/June

What I remember about the car is that it has:

-2510 HKS Turbos
-Upgraded Cams
-Upgraded Intercooler (HKS I think)
-Upgraded Radiator (Nismo)
-HKS Fual Rail
-Bigger Injectors
-AP Brakes
-2x 4-Point Harnesses
-Trust Sump extension
-Apex fual controller
-Turbo controller with splash time on console (so you can set the turbo pressure)
-Nismo Clutch Basket
-HKS Piping Kit
-Oil Cooler

Plus other bits N peices that I just cannot remember.

When I upgraded the car I made sure that tuned it to stay reliable, since then I service the every 2,000 to 2,500 Miles and it currently has around 11,000 miles on it.

It also has a brand new set of SO3's on it. The buyer will have to come to Belgium to pick the car up.

Right now the best offer is 27,000 UK Pounds.

Intial E, I also recently had a 996TT. How do you compare the sthright line speed? Is your R34 modified? I found that my R34 (550BHP) was faster to 240KM but then the TT takes off.

You can go to GT Sports in Yuen Long and look for Ah Wa. He is my 5th grade classmate. They got me the Skyline and they are doing the maintainence. In fact, I just came back from there today and had my oil change. They also have a 4 wheel dyno there.

Both of my 996 TT and the R34 TT are stock. Well, the 996 TT is definitely faster. That's why I am thinking of modding my R34 now. What do you suggest if I want to light tune my R34? I can't do major mod in this car because my wife will get mad at me.

11-11-2001, 07:15 PM
Hi InitialE, first, dump the stock air filter and fit an aftermarket ones .....eg. HKS Super Power Flow/ Blitz etc. Then, change the downpipe and exhaust system. That will free about 40-50hp easily. Later, install a boost controller to up the boost and remap the fuel programe using HKS F Con V Pro/ Apexi fuel computer or whatever aftermarket fuel comp. Than you would have another 60 hp. Your wife does not have to know....if you are worried about her driving the GTR, you could always turn the boost controller off when she drives the car!
Later, big turbos, cam kit, forged pistons, stroker kit, GT intercooler etc etc and you are well into 600hp!:D ENJOY!

Thanks for the advice. What kind of exhaust should I get? I want something quiet. Nismo or Mine's?

R33
11-11-2001, 07:47 PM
That's a fast reply!:D
Whatever you wish to install, just don't install a Trust exhaust...it's damn loud that when you are cruisibg at 110kph, you have to shout to communicate! I dumped the Trust pipe for the HKS Super Drager. It's street legal and with the cat unremoved, it's pretty quiet and will only roar once ypu hit 6000rpm. It's got a silencer mid way through the pipe. However the tail pipe is so huge you might not like the look of it....but that boils down to personal preference. NISMO is expensive. Mine's is good and very light....I think it's full titanium...so it is also expensive. The advantage is it's very light....my friend fitted a titanium in his EVO and it's only 4kg!

redback911
11-12-2001, 01:57 AM
I also like the HKS stuff, I had a Super Drager when my R34 was running 400BHP, when you get more HP then you need to fit something that breathes a little better. I moved to a HKS Hiper, it sounds AWESOME! I had a Ferrari 360 for a while and the R34 with Hiper outdoes the sound from the 360 anytime, windows down full RPM thru the tunnel in the R34 will blow you away, it sounds like a full GT race car.

The onyl thing that soudns better is a R34 bored out to 3.0 with Hiper.

I saw some posts earlier on top end speed, here is a pic I took in the 996 TT a while ago.

Initial, I plan to be fulltime in HK in 2-weeks time, maybe I can buy you a beer and pick you brains about the do's and dont's of Skyline ownership in HK.

R33 - Thanks for the advice. I will go to GT Sports to shop around on Wed. I think I am more into the Mine's exhaust cuz I think my car is really heavy.

Redback911 - When are you coming to HK? I am going back to Canada on 27/11, but I come back and forth very often. How old are you? It's gonna be a serious issue when you buy insurance here for your Skyline. I just went to an Evo meet yesterday and all the owners were complaining how difficult it is to get insurance for their cars. Skyline is pretty much the same. If you come to HK, what are you gonna do with your 996TT? If you want a brand new Skyline, I can help you with that.

redback911

Hiya Initial,

(SORRY OFFTOPIC)
Actually I just sold the TT, I wanted to sell it before it was one year old to get the best price. I have a GT2 being delivered in Febuary (Belgium car) or least I DID! It might not be a bad thing to delay it anyway now seeing as I in HK. Originally I wanted a GT2 Club Sport (Rollcage etc) but they could not deliver until towards the end of the year so I will probably pass my car on and wait till I get back to Europe.

Redback911: I sure hope that you were'nt driving while taking that pic!:D If you were, than you are a champion! One question about the Porsche TT....after upgrading your GTR to 550hp, do you still feel that the Porsche TT is faster than the GTR? I know of the Porsche's high torque due to it's big cc and I have yet to race a 911TT so I am wondering whether it's gonna be a close race or a whitewash.
About the Hiper exhaust, I have actually been recomended to use the same after my recent upgrade. Are they any better than the Super Drager in term of low end response? Would appreciate your advice.

Hiya Mate,

Sure I was driving! Once I balanced the camera it was easy to get off a few shots. Trying to change the CD and drink a beer while driving at 300 and taking a picture of the speedo is more difficult but practice makes perfect

;)

The main difference with the Hiper and Drager that I noticed was sound, the Hiper has a much deeper roar and really resonates off the tarmac, walls, tunnels etc... I am sure there is a slight performence gain but the car had a complete overhaul at the same time so I cannot say what HP the exhaust contributed.
