Wheel bearing

Hey. Found out the g/f's car needs to have a new driver's side wheel bearing and supposidly a tie rod. I told her to take it to an alignment shop and they came back with "it's not an alignment it's these things." Ok well we can't afford a 600 dollar bill for some small parts. Any ideas on chaning the Riviera's driver side bearing? I've never done one before but would consider myself a pretty good backyard mechanic. Also, pricing on something like that? NTB told her 200 smacks for an oem one? I think they suggested replacing the hub too but honestly I don't see the point of that. And fyi the car is a 96 Riviera Supercharged edition with 145k on the clock.

Thanks again!

Chris

Well, I talked to a few people and also made a trip to a couple auto stores and it seems that you can only get the bearing already pressed in a new hub with a new abs sensor rather than just replacing the bearing. Since it's the whole deal I don't feel like doing it myself so we called up this one guy and he said for $105 he would do the whole thing. Still deciding:-/

$105 to do this job is a fair deal. Unless you have the tools leave it alone. The nut holding the axle shaft alone is a bich to get off. Have him do it and take the g/f to a movie/dinner with the money you will save.

The 38mm or 34mm axle bolt not sure which one, usually comes off very easily, it's the bearing/hub assembly which is the hard part because it's made of steel and the knuckle it sits in is made of white metal/aluminum. The easiest way is to have a J 28733-B (http://127.0.0.1:9001/servlets/RetrieveTif?pic=5617) Front Hub Spindle Remover. I was able to remove mine by heating the knuckle with an acetyline torch then prying and tapping it apart. The bearing/hub assembly is one piece and an after market chinese replacement cost me $85. I think Autozone will lend you the tool for free, check the link I attached for the halfshaft removal procedure.http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/12/fd/7b/0900823d8012fd7b/repairInfoPages.htm
