I have a 97 base and it"s having tranny problems so i figured it'll be easier to swap in another ATX than troubleshooting this one. I guess my question is does the stealth sohc ATX fit the 3000gt sohc? has anyone done the swap before? Its my DD so i'd like to get it fixed ASAP. Thanks

yes, they are the same as long as they are sohc. go to your mechanic, diagnose the problem, and get an estimate. another tranny is going to put a hole in your pocket.
or better yet, explain the problem, and maybe we can help you.

SOHC or DOHC ATX transmissions for 3000GT's and Stealth's are the same thing. Only differences might be in the TCU between SOHC and DOHC for different shift points.

there are some shops that will diagnose the problem for free so that you might stick with them to get the problem fixed through them.

Yeah TCU is probly different since SOHC has 6k redline. As long as the trans is from a 93+ SOHC it should be the same with a 93+ DOHC

shizzat. i was thinking of manual/atx trannies being different by the flywheel and clutch difference, not sohc to dohc. my brain works too fast to filter. neva mind.

Thanks guys. I found a shop to take it too. If all else fails I can get Seth(Toddrs93 on 3si) to rebuild it for me. Very cool guy

The tech said i'd need a rebuild. Something about the clutch packs being bad. Car has 189k and this is the first trans rebuild/replace. $300 to put in a trans for me, $700 to rebuild, which would you say was the better choice? if anyone has a trans from an sohc stealth or GT pm me. thanks

i would say rebuild. I don't think the price of a new transmission, plus shipment from a member here to you would be any lesser than the rebuild. but that's just my opinion.

New (Used) Lower milage trans FTW.. If you get it rebuild I would make a large bet that when the crack it open the will "Find" more problems with it and It will end up costing you more money!

If you know that the transmission you're looking at is good then I wouldn't rebuild. Jason said it best. Seven hundred for a rebuild isn't bad but they could find more problems, which is highly probable. You're better off with a different tranny.

Also agree with new or low milage FTW. That way you know its got no issues

I'm gonna go against the others here, if its a reputable transmission shop I would personally opt for the rebuild. A rebuild kit should come with everything they would need, so there wouldn't be a reason for any extra problems. The problem with buying used parts is, no matter the mileage, you never know how it was treated or how long it will last. And being that our ATX transmissions are very delicate (aka weak when abused) that's not a risk I would want to take. With a rebuild it's like getting a brand new and unabused transmission.
It's also a risk that I didn't take when the ATX in my SL gave up. I ended up just converting it to 5-speed. Slightly more expensive than either of your options, much more time consuming, but more reliable not to mention faster and better on gas.

yeah.. i wouldn't have bought my car if it didn't have stick. it would be worth it to go manual IMO. less messy parts than an auto.. and lighter! :-D

I can't thank you guys enough for the help. well the shop is owned by my dad's buddy. i would buy all the parts from ipt and he would do the rebuild. I understand exactly what you mean Twisted and that makes alot of sense. if I don't choose either or, then I'll probably go with a manual conversion. I think Yogurt on 3si is selling a kit for $600. Again, i really appreciate the help. AF Rocks man

Yogurt (Steve) is local to me, he's a good guy. I've done business with him in the past and probably will in the future as well.

I have a 96 Stealth SOHC out here that has a bad engine. The transmission is good in it. I drove it down the road and everything. I would sell it to you for 500.00 plus whatever the shipping would be if you are still looking for one. I also have the transmission computer out of it if you wanted it also. Just let me know. It has like 86,000 miles on it. Just let me know.

^^ Sounds like a good deal. You should start a for sale thread and post up pics and more details.

Does the 96 still have the spoiler on it? If so how much would you let it go for and do you have pics?

Yes I still have it. I have pretty much the whole car left. I just put the interior out of it into my 3k. Of course now I have the interior out of my 3k left. I know 3sx sells those spoilers for like 300.00 but I would sell it for say 75.00 plus shipping. What do you think? I think I will post a thread saying I have the car parts for sale. Thanks
