What trans does the '77 Ninety-Eight have with the 403 engine? A TH-400? Also, does any one know what gear ratios it used, and whether it was a short or long tailshaft trans?

Every one that I have seen has used the TH350 long tailshaft, although I am not quoting any factory specs, just what I have observered.

OK, thanks! Does a TH-400 bolt up in place of a Th-350?

In addition to the TH-350 some also came with the TH-400 & TH-200! If you do in fact have the TH-350, the TH-400 should be a bolt-in exchange as long as you have the same “long tail-shaft”. You may need to change the driveshaft yoke. IIRC, the TH-400 has a larger output shaft.
You need to check the identification tag on your transmission to ensure that you properly identify the unit; this tag is typically located on the drivers side of the transmission above the pan.
