last night something under the hood fucked up. it was running really hot and everytime i gave it some gas i heard a lot of knocking, like i was in my explorer again. when i opened the hood it was steaming, some of it came from the intake manifold area, and it looked the coolent resuvar was leaking from the mouth.

You overheated it and it pissed out all of the water. Find the source of the overheating, fix it and CHANGE THE OIL on the engine! This is the only way you can expect it to survive if it hasn't already suffered fatal damage.

You overheated it. For somew reason, coolant either wasn't flowing or leaked out, or the engine was excessively hot, and the coolant boiled. The boiling coolant spewed out the overflow.

You now need to refill it to the proper level with the proper coolant concentration to prevent freezing (something which may have caused the problem in the first place). Then you need to determine if there is leakage and where, and/or whether the coolant is actually pumping through the system while the engine is running.

me and my dad put in a new thermostat, i test drove it, parked it and noticed antifreeze leaking(lots of it) from the water pump.

you may have to replace the waterpump, which wont be fun.
i did it on mine, and ended up having to get into the engine compartment and stand on the swaybar while contorting myself into position to replace the pump.

i ended up removing nearly all the accessories off the front of the engine and removing the fan shroud.
that made it a lot easier to do

replacing the water pump wasn't too bad, beat the hell out of paying someone to do it. anyways its runnin fine as frog hair again.

Did you change the oil? Do that before driving it any further. Getting oil that hot (if the engine was hot enough to ping, the oil overheated too) causes it to break down and will lead to rapid bearing failure.

Other than that, glad to see it's in decent shape.

Agreed, along with very rapid bearing wear, the broken down oil will also begin to form mass amounts of sludge inside then engine if not changed immediately.
