looking at a G3

I'm looking at getting a G3 pretty soon here. Just curious what you can do performance-wise to a golf, what kind of numbers are we talking? Keep in mind that I'm 18, and while I do have a job, I'm still poor lol. I've seen what kind of exterior and interior customization you can do, and I'm pretty impressed. Just curious if I can get a little 'go' to back the 'show' :]. Any input is greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance,

Are you looking at a VR6 or 2.0?

I don't know. I've looked at both, and heard some mixed feelings. basically, I want whichever I can do the most to for the least amount of money [read: I'm cheap]. lol which is better in your opinion?why?

The VR6 is a greater engine, but everything about it is expencive, gas, insurance, maintnace, modifying.
If money matters, get a 2.0. They are cheaper, and it handles better.
The VR6 wil preform better straight ahead, but it is also very front heavy, giving it understeer isues.

cool, the 2.0 sounds like the way to go. now that I know what I'm looking at, I can do a little more in-depth research. what kind of numbers can you pull out of a 2.0? 0-60, quarter mile, whatever. oh, and about how much cash would it take to get a stock G3 there?

If I was modding a 2.0, my first step would be a suspension upgrade. Then a TT exhaust, and eventually a chip/cam combo, either TT/TT or GIAC/TT.
This will probably give you a high 15 second 1/4 mile run. (I don't really care about dragracing.)
And the price, $1400 + $car.

I can do that. I've seen a few turbo and supercharger kits floating around the net. basically I'm looking for a car I can keep around a while and sink some money into. not necessarily wanting to go the Honda/Mitsubishi route, the Golf's styling caught my eye. just as long as I can give my civic and mustang friends something to raise an eyebrow at, I'll be happy :D . only problem now is finding a 95 3 door around the Houston area. oh, and paying my parents off for the POS grand am I'm driving now :bloated:

The GTi is nothing more then a trim level for the Golf.
As for lowering, everything from $0 - $1500.

~$1500 for a set of nice coilovers.
You can springs and shocks for ~$500.

I drive a '94, 3 door, 1.8 G3. I've had it lowered 40mm, and it really helped the looks of the car, in my opinion. Also the handling obviously improved greatly. MUCH less roll. Next step for me is new exhaust and new chip.
