rubbing grinding front passenger side

 When you are going about 80 kph/ 50mph it is almost a 'wooing' sound. When you are going a few miles an hour it is a rubbing sound that happens with each revolution of the wheel. Somestimes I think I have heard a grinding sound. I am not sure because I am in Calgary and it is snow on the roads winter here and the snow creaks and grinds; it makes a road test testier :) When I hear the noise at low speed and I apply the brake, it doesn't seem to change the sound of the rubbing which made me think it isn't a brake problem. I changed the calipers and rotors last summer. Does it sound like a wheel bearing? I have always heard CV joint probs while turning corners. Can they do funny things on the straight?

That is about your '93. Usually, wheel bearings will turn a rather medium toned humming sound ..is that whooing?..., that changes in intensity depending which side you are turning....but what you describe next does not match the known pattern. May be you have 2 causes; I would be tempted to get under and manually test shake the c.v. joints...after making sure brakes are not involved....and....check wheel bolts, to begin with; you have switched to winter tires recently, no ?

Yes you are right it is my 93 TS, sorry for missing that.
I worked on it outside in the cold today. The noise is gone and I think there is less pulsation when braking too.
It turned out to be loose wheel nuts. I didn't tighten them enough last summer when I did the front brakes. That folding wheel wrench always seems like it is going to split or fold so I haven't been torquing the nuts as much. I guess it is a good idea to carry along a big star wrench or a tire iron or?
I moved the winter tires to the front while I had the wheels up (I only have two winter tires). I figured they are better off on the front.
I am happy that it wasn't those $250 bearing units or CV joints.:grinyes:
