i have a 94 safari awd 168,000 miles. i have never replaced the 02 sensor.
it runs and idles well, doesn't burn oil, but i wish my mileage were better. 12 city and 18 hwy. originally 13-14/20-21. i don't get any ses codes but it is suggested to replace sensor every 60k. i did switch to k/n air filter which gave me a 10% improvement in mileage. i run syn oil, recently switched transfer case and rear diff. to synthetic but havent had chance to check mileage yet.
what can i expect with new sensor?

There are 3, possibly 4, sensors on your engine, and yes, they should be replaced every 100,000 miles. Spark plugs, (AC Delco), distributor cap and rotor, (AC Delco), ignition wires, (AC Delco or Autolite Professional series), fuel filter, and check fuel pressure should also be done. All will help fuel mileage.

replaced fuel filter several weeks ago first time, because i couldn't find schrader valve to depressurize system, decided i coldn't tempt fate any longer and traced line til i found it. never considered or understood fuel pressure was important on fuel injection to optimize gas mileage . new plugs less than 10k ago. didn't change cap and rotor at that time probably with last wire change. will do that soon. local farm and fleet store has autolite pro wire set for 22 bucks even less when they go on sale regularily.
will definitely change o2 sensor(s). i didn't realize there was more than 1 on the 94. thought multiple sensor weren't used til 96. i'll have to look harder. being it's only 3 above today i'm not too motivated to crawl under the van today. will consider after that to test fuel pressure if i don't see enough improvement.willhave to purchase, borrow or steal tester. as i said van otherwise starts runs and idles great with out any codes. only code i've EVER gotten was for egr, and the van was definitely running poorly when that happened 5-6 years ago. new egr valve fixed that problem.
thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
