1996 4.0 4wd tranny shifts crazy! Sometimes it even comes out of gear. Example, yesterday i am driving in highway at 80 i mean 70 since i dont speed. the cruise was on and all of a sudden my rpms went high and i pulled over to the side of the road and tride to take off again and it went but would not shift out of 1st. i stopped, popped hood, unpluged tps, motor died, pluged it back in, started it and drove off and it was shifting fine. I have replaced the tps about a month ago but i dont know how to adjust it to get the correct voltage? Any good advice is appreciated!

I'm not up on these systems but wildman directed me here yesterday while dealing with my no spark issue, However it states nothing about adjusting but does give voltage specs. ?

At some point, the adjustable part of the TPS was redesigned to a non-adjustable type only determinable to have 'gone bad' by a volt-test at certain points at the harness.

I don't know what year this change took place, but, the older style has 2 hex head screws in slightly-slotted holes through the TPS holding it to the throttle-body making adjustments possible.

The newer style has no such adjustable slots that I know of.

If I'm mistaken, please chime in.... . . . ... . . . .. . . . .. now.

Check on the MAP sensor also. Sometimes causes shifting problems when it starts to go bad or has a vacuum line leaking.

The MAP sensor is a good place to start as are all of the vacuum lines. I had a similar problem with a 98 Grand Am. My Jeep Wrangler is a 99' so the sensor is non adjustable. I had only had the Grand Am for a week when this started and ended up replacing most of the vacuum lines under the hood. We were about 120 miles from home when this started so to get us home I used a piece of fishtank type tubing. It wasn't perfect but it got us home until I could get my hands on some real vacuum hose.
