For five glorious years Warren (Primera Man) has been running the AF Model of the Year comp, but sadly he is now unable to continue. Even though the comp will not be the same without Warren we hope to preserve this tradition so proudly announce AFMOTY 07! The rules will continue pretty much as they have in previous years. So read on... :)

AF members who have joined AF BEFORE the 1st December 2007 may enter.

Open to model cars and bikes only.

Entries must be completed this year (2007), by AF members registered before 31st December 2007.

Deadline for entries is 31st December 2007.

Only ONE model may be entered per person.

The Modeling Mods decision will be FINAL.

HOW TO ENTER

Entries must be sent by Private Message to me, "RallyRaider".

One photo only will be posted. May be a composite.

Photo must be 800x600 resolution and no larger than 150 KB.

Photo's only - no text.

Including a link to a thread in the AF Completed/Gallery section is encouraged.

To prove the model is your own work, a link to an existing WIP or Completed thread on AF must be provided. If no such thread exists, then a second photo must be submitted showing the model alongside a piece of paper with your AF screen name.

HOW TO VOTE

Voting will start early January 2008 when the Official AFMOTY 07 thread is posted and run for two weeks.

Each model will be identified by its photo and the builder’s user name.

To vote, simply send a PM to me with your vote - NO OTHER VOTING METHODS WILL BE ACCEPTED
You can allocate points to THREE (3) MODELS.

1st=3pts
2nd=2pts
3rd=1pt

Only AF members that joined BEFORE 1st December 2007 may vote. This is intended to avoid the possibility of people logging on with different names to vote again. If a vote is suspect, it will be investigated and if necessary deleted along with any involved entries.

You CAN NOT vote for your own model.

The judges decision will be FINAL.

In the event of a tie, the model that received the most 3pt votes will be declared the winner. If still a tie - then the most 2pt votes. If still a tie - then the model that I could lap quickest around the Nurburgring in GT4 will be declared the winner. :)

Updates of voting will be posted every few days.

At this stage there will be no prize other than the honor of being crowed AFMOTY 07 winner.

Most important rule is to remember that this is intended to be FUN. Any negative opinions will be aggressively ignored. :)

Let me see if I got this right...
If I tie,and my model is a VW Golf, and the model i'm against is a Minolta 89C-V,the car who makes the fastest lap is the winner?!

Gosh,i'm lost... u_u

Can WIP cars be entered?

Well done for taking the reigns on this Phil.

Let's hope there are a lot of entries this year, I have seen loads of fanatastic models on the completed models section of AF.

I have a question ...

There will be some division among both experienced and novice?

Greetings!

Phil thanks for taking the reins on this one. Do you want us to submit a photo to you or just send you the completed thread which has the photo's?

Thanks.

Phil, I know you said "no text" but I'll ask anyway, is the Title of the model/car model allowed?

Glad you took the job on and I'm rooting for you to make it you 199th consecutive victory! (it's all part of the tradition IMO :) )

Hello from South Africa my friends!

Thank you Phil for keeping this tradition alive! I'm definitely in....just need to figure out which model to enter :screwy:

Yes - I'm still alive and enjoy South Africa and the neighbouring countries - but the internet availability and speed... :shakehead :shakehead :shakehead

I occasionally read AF at work...but it's only half the fun without seeing pictures.

Hope to see some awesome work in the contest

Cheers

Thanks Phil for running the contest.
I can also offer for the winner a wheel set from my range.
Hope to compete you again as in 2005 :) and again bike vs. car :)

Thanks guys I' hope the AFMOTY can continue to be as good as it has in the past. I mainly put that Nurburgring tie breaker in there to see if people were paying attention. Guess they are!

As for specific questions:

rod_k2: I think it would be best to show off our work in the best possible light so a fully completed model is the way to go. If it is not finished in time there is always next year. I fact I'd recommend taking your time and not rushing for a deadline.

Luchato: No, there are no separate categories in this comp, just a showcase of the best AF has to offer for the year.

mikemechanic: I'd prefer it if you send a link to a specific photo that you think best represents your model in the comp.

klutz_100: A watermark or name of the model should be okay. But what is most important is a big, clear photo, extra text mostly just clutters things up.

Thanks to MidMazar and geronimo77 for offering prizes - you guys rock! In the past I've been let down by people promising things which is why I wrote that there would be no prizes above. But I know you guys are good for it and if some prizes encourages more entries then that is great!

Entries have slowly started to hit my inbox - keep 'em coming! :)

P.S. I have decided that since I'm running the comp it would be best if I don't enter myself.

klutz_100

Phil, I was talking with two eminent AF members - Mr. Ping and Mr. Pong - and they authorized me to tell you that they will happily provide a sets of 612 Scaglietti "China Tour" decals for the 3 top placed builds if you want them.

P.S. I have decided that since I'm running the comp it would be best if I don't enter myself.
Very noble and correct but, speaking for myself, not necessary - unless you feel strongly about it.

i agree, you deserve as much as anyone to enter, even more so! since your takingcontrol of this, good luck, hopefully i can rush my ST205 celica thorugh the production line in time for comp, either that or make another turbo for my 32 skyline...rush rush rush :D

I believe multimedia kits are allowed but 100% diecasts usually haven't been.

Captain Mark
12-11-2007, 04:00 PM
I entered a multi-media kit last year, no issue. I think as long as it comes boxed in a whole bunch of separate pieces that require glueing and painting then it's fair game.

RR, as Hawk queried, can you tell us how many entries we have so far?

RallyRaider
12-12-2007, 01:48 AM
Lownslow, no the comp is not limited to plastic kits. Resin and metal are allowed, even diecasts could be, so long as they were torn apart and rebuilt.

As for entries - it has been kinda slow so far. Only 11 entries have been received. I was looking through the history of the comp and numbers in each year have been:

2002 - 38 entries
2003 - 45 entries
2004 - 45 entries
2005 - 28 entries
2006 - 39 entries

So I hope more models will be forthcoming in the next few weeks and we can get somewhere around the 30 to 40 mark.

ok, tried to resize in photoshop, when at 800x600 the file size is 900kb, to get it down to 150, the image is like 100x80 what am i doing wrong?

klutz_100
12-12-2007, 09:57 PM
1. Select image size 800x600

then

2. select "save for web". Set an appropriate image quality and it will show you the size of the final image. Save at the quality that will give you an image size 150k or less

Oh man.

It occurs to me that I haven't finished ANYTHING this year.

Oh man....

shieldwulf
12-13-2007, 03:05 AM
When I changed the image quality so that the file size is within 150Kb for 800x600 size, it resulted in a grainy picture.

Can the rule be adjusted a little so that the 150Kb limit can be increased to somewhere between 220Kb and 250Kb? :naughty:

RallyRaider
12-13-2007, 05:36 AM
The reason the rules have a limit of 150 kb is to keep the size of the thread down. If we have 25 entries at 250kb each then that would total over 6 MB of pictures. Add in all the advertising, signatures and what not and the page size could easily get close to 10 Meg. I think it is reasonable to ask people to be economical with their bandwidth.

There are plenty of graphics programs that can compress the files without losing any significant quality. The rule is the same for everybody. If you are having trouble then post the original pic and I'll help compress it for you.

shieldwulf
12-13-2007, 06:00 AM
Yup, I can understand about the bandwidth. I'll try compressing my pic using another graphic program. Failing which, I shall ask for your assistance!

I remember back in the day when this first started, there was only one forum, "Car Modeling". No "Work in Progress" or "Completed" subforums. I wonder if that is why entries are down (again).

Maybe this needs to be a sticky in the subforums?
