I was wondering if any of you guys would know who would win in a 1/4 mile race. Everybody at school says a Maxima could barely beat a Mustang LX(V6). I personally think there dumb but oh well. Also has anyone every raced a mustang GT?

The new GT's are quite a bit faster than the last gen, but still not fast enough... :D
Beat one? More like he got spanked! :flash:

A stock Mustang GT should destroy a stock 02 Maxima. I think they have similar amounts of HP, but the body of a Mustang is like plastic. The car must be light as hell.

not sure about the 02's 1/4 time but on a stang GT 5sp, really really good drivers can pull off a high 13's. Most drivers on the GT can get on the low 14's. If u want proof, you can always look up mustang sites with real timeslips. Don't know how those things are so fast...guess it's something with their oil...:p

Altima is about 6.2 0-60. Thats with 240 hp and 246Tq, same as new maxima - 15hp. Figure 6 speed tranny 15 more hp, extra weight, probably about 6.1 6.0 if its geared right. I raced my friends gt stang againt an m3, beat that...so i am sure it can take out a nice new max, although I love them, may they r-i-p =P:smoka:

Hummm....
I'm pretty sure a mustang GT will beat a 02 Maxima BUT not because of weight. The Mustang 5 speed GT is at 3,624lbs while the Maxima 6 speed SE is at 3,221lbs. :)

You will get spanked pretty bad in the 1/4 mile by a '02 GT.
Traffic light - to - light is another story, if you can get the jump on him he'll only probably beat you by a door or you could possibly beat him.
If it is a real driver, he has your ass and is gonna walk away from you pretty bad. Just speaking from experience in racing with various cars, I don't race my max, too slow.

It is not HP but Displacement that wins here and the Stang GT will kick us Maxima owners butts. (From Edmunds.com) Equipped with a 4.6-liter overhead-cam V8, GT output is listed at 260 horsepower at 5,250 rpm and 302 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. That's good for a 0-to-60 blast of less than 6 seconds. Neither the Max nor the Altima can do this, with all due respect to both since they are passenger cars not sports cars.

umm but i just saw in motorweek that the altima can run the 0-60 in 5.9 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 14.4 seconds. That still probably can't beat a GT but i think it might be able to keep. I always here about people beating mustang gt's too.

Sorry guys, I f'd up. The post should've read -
The Cobras do the 0-60 in 4.7 seconds and quarter in 13.2 (Road & Track-4/00, Car and Driver-4/00).
Motor Trend Magazine had the GTs doing 0-60 in 5.4 seconds and the quarter in 14 flat (12/99).

I have no idea where u got a stock Mustang GT running a 4.7 seconds 0-60 and 13.2 seconds 1/4 mile. I looked up a 2001 Cobra Mustang(320 hp and 317 lb feet) in Motor Week and it ran a 5.3 in 0-60 and 13.7 in the 1/4.
here's the site if u want to look at it also the altima is there too.

When i went to the track there were new gts running mid 14s all day. I think the max would lose because it would get killed off the line due to the fwd vs. rwd. I raced a manual 01 Gt on my way to school and he beat me by 3 cars without dumping his clutch. My bro has a 2k 5spd with mods and he would have lost too. I have a friend with a 97 SE 5spd with mods and a 50 shot and he smokes gts all day:D .

the Stang Gt runs more like the 5.6-5.9 depending on the skill of the driver. Of course, if the driver sucks that much, he'll be pulling some low to mid 6's and that's the only way the 02 max stock will be the gt stock.

Thanks, I think some 15" drag radials would make a huge difference. I have an auto, and it's impossible to modulate the throttle on the bottle (hey that kinda rymes!) :D

 :p Ok guys you say that Mustang Gts are faster than Maximas.
Where I live there are alot of Mustang GTs here. I had a 96 Maxima SE
that beat every GT around here. By the way your talking about the new
Gt beating the new 02 Maxima, 0 to 60 maybe so, but if the Maximas
1/4 time is the same as the 02 Altima 3.5 SE the Maxima will beat or be
about the same speed as a new GT. Sorry GT boys.

Does anyone else think that its kinda sad that a Japanese V6 family sedan is not only competing but might also beat an American V8 "sports" car?
Just a thought.......

heh i guess you got a point. but remember the new Atlimas and the Maxima's where always designed with performance in mind. sooo just think of them as comfortable 4 door sports cars. much like the Evo or WRX but to a lesser extent.

Moe Its always been like that, Japaense squeeze the shit out of their motors where as ford and chevy make it bigger for more power. But look which motor lasts longer in the end, and note I didnt say which is more reliable:p

Nissans "4 DOOR SPORTS CAR" is the Sentra -R V-spec....THATS like the WRX, the EVO and the rest of the four door pocket rockets...
the Maxima is a family sedan with balls, which would make the SE version at most a Sports Sedan. Either way its a car that can seats 5 ppl in comfort, has 2 less cylinders, AND has 1.1 litres less displacement, and only 5 less hp...... Are you really tryin to tell me that, THAT is not either a) Poor american engineering or B) Amazing Japanese engineering?

IF YOU DID NOT READ MY LAST POST, THE MAXIMA IS A 4 DOOR SPORTS CAR, IF YOU OWNED ONE YOU WOULD KNOW SO DONT ARGUE WITH ME ON IT
quoted from maximadriver.com
"The term "Four Door Sports Car" was coined with the Nissan Maxima in mind. With a powerful 3.0 Liter V6 engine, the Maxima is America's best selling V6 engine for six years running (Infinity i30 is included in this number). With the introduction of the 4th gen Maxima in 1995, it won Motor Trend's 1995 Import Car of the year. This car is, without a doubt, performance and luxury fused into one. "
im not the only one that feels this way

I did own one, we owned a 98 Maxima SE....
And dont argue with you? I mean honestly who do you think you are? This is a forum, and as such i am intitled to my own opinion as you are to yours. But what i was tryin to do was disscuss it, but you have to act like a 3 year-old....
And all you proved with you're quote was that you and the Web Master of maximadriver.com agree with eachother. Good for you!
Hell i dont even know what we're arguing about.....In my eyes a four door sports car is just that, a car with four doors that, whos emphisis is on speed/sportyness....When i hear that i think of the V-spec, the WRX, the EVO etc. But if you say Sports Sedan, as in plenty of sportyness and speed with a big chunk of Lux. I think of the Maxima, the 5-series BMW, or like an E55.....
Thats ALL i was tryin to say....

no im just imature, and I get that 3 year old, well more like 6 year old thing all the time, but it is a Sports Sedan, so even if im not calling it that, thats what it is known as, and a sentra is a compact sedan by the way....the se-r is the sports package one FYI
and yes WRX and EVO are, so is a 4 door skyline, and the primera, comparing those 2 cars the GT mustang and the Maxima is techincally comparing a sports car and a sports sedan, but hey if you think its a 4 door car you call it that, im just proving a point by arguing =)
its a Forum what else are we gonna do, meet up and really get the cars and prove all this :flash: :flash: :flash: :flash: :flash:

Just wanted to fill some people in. I have a 2002 nissan maxima with the 6 speed. Its loaded with almost every option. Which means it heavy. I have raced a 2002 mustang gt which had an exhaust. Top end the maxima has the mustang hands down. I had him beat once i hit sixth gear. 40 mph roll start mustang takes off but then the maxima catches up. Obviously off the line the mustang wins because it was mainly designed to drag.

Dear god this thread is old.
In any case, Mustang off the line, I would imagine the Max might make up some time at higher speeds. But all things equal, the Mustang shouldn't lose is a straight line race, or any race for that matter.
