Yeah, so my girls rig, '92, hasn't had reverse lights since we bought it Nov. '06.

We bought it from a mechanic at his shop and were told that "the reverse lights don't work." I asked if he knew about/had done the NSS... He says,"Yeah. I pulled that last week and cleaned it up. They still don't work for some reason." I told him it was okay and that we'd take it anyway.

So, inspection month has passed, my girl reminds me of it again with a not too loud but still concerning "SH*T!" We're trying to figure out where we're going to take it when I remember those d*mned reverse lights don't work. (neither do mine btw, but the inspector-guy let me pass b/c I have 4 auxiliary lights back there that I can readily turn on when I need to blind tailgaters and such. She does not.)

Now, I'm trying to figure out what's going to be easier, taking her front fogs off and relocating them to the rear, or cleaning the NSS that I figured the mechanic we bought it from was more than likely b/s'ing about. Bear in mind, it's around 2pm Saturday.

We decided to go ahead and clean the NSS together, 'again'.

Well, after much fun and leverage application, the both of us covered in grease, oil, and other nasties, we have a cig together while using some carb/choke cleaner to get the superfluous amount of gunk built up on the insides of said NSS.

We got everything back together without too much trouble and lowered her stock height girl back down, started the beast that she is and moved the shifter throughout it's range a few times settling finally in reverse only to see myself shaking my head no in her rearview.

I jump in the seat to give it a try.(like I have 'the touch' or something) Nothing...

I go ahead and check to see that the rig does in fact only start in P and N as it should, that's fine.

So. Now I hang my head in deep triangulating thought. "I KNOW! I bet it's the bulbs!" I say.

We, dirty as we are, proceed to take out the rear tail light assembly's. Once out, I discover that the ground is disconnected on my side. I tell her that I bet that's the cause right there.

That is until I see her side... There's no light AT ALL. Just a couple of cut wires from the bunch. WTF!? I say way too loud.

Well, I've got to work tomorrow. So she's off to my grandmum's to jack a reverse light from my '89 parts-rig that hasn't had anything taken from it since I bought our current rigs last Nov and Dec. :grinno:

I just can't belive that the mechanic originally, and I both overlooked the most obvious, easy approach for a year. Go figure. :banghead: :icon16: :banghead:

Lesson Learned: I'm as good at this 'Jeep Thing' as an auto mechanic that owns his own shop!

No worries it's happened to all of us at some point or another we over look the obvious because we assume it's ok. We weren't born knowing everything we know about cars had to learn and to learn have to make mistakes and overlook things sometime. At least your parts rig is getting some use and her xj's going again.
