honestly, $500 isn't that much. You might want to look on ebay. Look in the newbie thread, there is a list of equipment rankings - ends up being a pretty good guide.

since your not looking to go all crazy like most ere do (at leat to the standards of the average person) you cna get a nice upgrade over stock for 500. your looking probably 100-150 for a CD player. id check out sonicelectronix.com if you need something cheap if you want quality and no worries check out crutchfield.com. speakers well if your just using your cd player amp (enough for most people) what year is your car? its easier to find out what size speakers youll need. any way figure about 100-150 on speakers to no need to go way over the top on speakers if your using an amp. so your looking 200-300 left if your comfortable installing things yourself you can get a sub and amp for added bass, if you need installation budget about 150 if your getting it done local more if your going to circuit city / best buy. t helps to know what your lookign for jsut sounds good or fancy stuff like bluetooth and usb slots in the CD playeer, do you want subs? can you install yourself?

aww1 had the right idea with starting with sonicelectronics.com. I use mid level pioneers as a consistant, this is because you can really tweek the sound and filter frequencies to tailor your sound for your taste and speaker alotment. You should be able to get a pioneer deh-p5900ib with the install kit for about 200.00 this is a good foundation with the 7 band eq, remote, and quality output with plenty to expand on for the future addons. This should leave you with money left over to do speaker upgrades for your factory slots these are 6.75 from the factory so you will have to adapt to 6.5. In that case I would go with the kicker 6.5 or the kicker6.75 component set DS650.2 for about 90.00. I say kicker for components, however not for subs! that should give you a good bseline with out being over priced.

ya sonicelectronix has great prices but ive heard people have problems with things being out of stock that were listed in stock. crutchfield is overpriced but they give great directions and have the best customer service i know of.

thats fine for your purposes pioneer head units are good and solid, it also has a pre amp out if you want to expand later. you will need to pairs of speakers though. crutchfield normally bundles installation accessories, check this before buying those part separate

because a good set of front speakers is going to give u a better sound stage and unless u drive with other people then y bother with rear speakers.

By the way if you want it to be loud you will most definitely need an amplifier. I suggest picking a good head unit to start with, Alpine is good, then save more money and get a good set of components and an amp. That will have you happy for awhile, then when you're ready drop some cash on a good sub and amp and you'll be set for a couple years.
