My car is a 2000 Duratec Vin codes "S"
Another Taurus forum I frequent has been having a lot of these codes lately on 2000 and newer models
A couple of weeks ago I threw the P0171 lean code.
I cleared it and ran 5 or 600 miles and then threw P0171 and P0174. This means that both banks are showing lean
On wednesday my car started running rough when I started it in the cool morning and has been doing it every morning since
Afte doing some research and then acquiring the parts to fix this It has pretty much been agreed to by other people that have had the same problem .
The rubber tube that connects from the upper intake manifold and goes down into the PCV valve deteriorates ,gets a hole in it and collapes.
This causes a vaccum leak which triggers the lean codes.
These are the parts needed to fix the car.
YF1Z-6A664-AB which is a rubber and steel hose assy available only from Ford. It is about 23 dollars at the dealer and 12 dollars at the online ford places.
You also need the PCV valve which is motorcraft part number EV-243
Many parts stores have this PCV valve listed wrong.
Some people may be able to fix it differently than I did but the following procedure is they only way I could do it and I am a fairly Decent wrench.
Take the upper intake manifold off and disconnect all hoses , electrical plugs and fittings off.
Pull the wiring harness up and out of the way.
Get a pair of 90 degree needle nose pliers to be able go grab the PCV valve and turn it counter clockwise to get it to come out.
Put the new PCV in .
Attached the new hose assy and then put the upper intake on using new gaskets.
This will eliminate the codes and restore a smooth idle and better gas mileage.
This is a picture of the correct parts needed for the job.
These parts can be had online for around 20 dollars

I had this one for a while on my 2000 Taurus and there's no real damage to the engine it just inhibits power and cuts down on mpg a bit if not taken care of because the engine will try to compensate for the lean codes. There's a few things to check on this. Oxygen sensors, EGR system, Mass Air Flow sensor, check for dirty or clogged air filter which can clog up the MAF. You can clean that out with some brake cleaner just be sure the MAF is dry before you reinstall it. Check the vacuum hoses for any leaks or breaks. Check the fuel filter and that you're getting proper fuel pressure. You can pick up a gauge for that at a local parts store and if they don't have one they can order it for you. You can also try running an engine cleaner in case there is a dirty injector or just some gunk that's clogging something. Worst case scenario, which ended up being the cause of mine, is a catalytic converter. Those you can get a direct fit or a universal one but you have to have pipe to modify to put a universal one in. There's a few wholesale autopart websites you can order one from for $200-$300. Otherwise Ford will try to get you to pay $300-$400 for one of theirs. Mine had two so thankfully only one had to be replaced. If you can find a mechanic to cut it out, they can clean it but most shops won't do that because it's a temporary fix and won't pass inspection and they can't guarantee it will keep the check engine light off but for a quick fix to replace later they can clean it out and weld it back in. I haven't found many mechanics who will do that though. Check the small inexpensive stuff first before you go to a shop so they know what not to check. And for some prebent vacuum hoses you can actually go buy a unicoil at O'Reily's and bend a straight hose up to 90 degrees without it pinching. Can help save a dollar or two here and there.

I just had a fuel tank replaced with a brand new one and used old sending unit/pump. Also replaced fuel filter. I was also told that some welding of the cross over pipe was done which was near and o2 sensor while replacing leaking oil pan gasket. Both jobs done at the same time. One day later, not only did the check engine light come on for 2 codes mentioned above but I believe the third one was for the O2 sensor(po161?). I'm being told that these all point to the MAF sensor. Any other opinions are welcome.

Fixed one with rubbing alcohol for cleaning + glued PCV valve into the valve cover with RTV sealent for Intakes.

2001 FFV WAGON
I had this error code come up for my car and found a vacuum leak coming from the PCV valve part num EV-228 elbow going to the edge of the intake manifold.

What is the best procedure to remove/replace this hose? Is the best way to get it off, to take the upper intake off?

You do not need to take the upper manifold off in order to replace the PCV valve. Remove the top air cleaning house and remove hoses. next disconnect IAC (Idle Air Controller), MAF sensor, and the throttle body electrical connecters. Remove throttle body and you will have plenty of room to remove PCV valve. I used long handled needle nose pliers to remove the PCV valve. reinstall all parts and be on your way!

Be super careful of these codes. We replaced the catalytic converters, all 4 O2 sensors, the pcv valve, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, fuel filters and had the injectors cleaned and found out yesterday that from running it lean we burnt out 2 cylinders they now have no compression so my 6 is now a 4. I suggest if you get them fix it Immediately, we had them and ran the car after fixing different things only 2 days and the cylinders went. Good Luck.

2003 Taurus 3.0 replaced the rubber tube going from the PCV to the intake manifold FORD 2F1Z6C324A PCV VALVE AND VENT HOSE. About $25 at Ford. No tools required to replace it . Thanks one all
