I don't speak car...96 Accord needs help!

I don't speak car but this is my best shot. I have a 1996 Honda accord lx 5 spd that has been maintained fairly well (until august) with 120,000 miles on it. Takes several "cranks" to turn over. My dad likes to work on our cars but has gotten to busy so now I need a heads up before I take it to the shop. Jumps in first gear at 2000 rmp, in all other gears it hesitates or stumbles between 1.5 and 3 rmps, it also vibrates (kinda twangy) when I accelerate strongly. Grind/thumps when I turn left even though I just got my "boots" replaced in june. How important is it to do the timing belt? Some say yes, some say no.......

Please help.

The timing belt is VERY IMPORTANT. If that breaks you could have major engine damage. The Timing belt is over due and should be changed ASAP. Change the water pump while your at it. Without a timing belt you aren't going any where.

Sounds like it's time for a 120K service.
Fluids(Trans/engine/coolant)
Filters(fuel/air)
Valve adjustment
Plugs, cap/rotor
Brake service
Rotate
etc.

and of course the timing belt.

$1,000 in maint. is a whole lot cheaper than a new engine or car payments.
