Need some motivation!

Hey guys. Lately I have been running out of overall steam and just don't have any interest on gettin' the Talon going. Here's the status:
The engine has a spun rod bearing, which happened back in July. Since then I had a totally separate block built with a stroker kit that included Wiseco 8.8:1 pistons and Eagle rods. Also I have a Buschur racing stage 1 head with Brian Crower cams to go with it. In this mitsu box I have here we got a ACT flywheel, centerforce clutch, new clave cylinder, mitsu timing belt and all tensioners, complete engine gasket set, new oil pan, new front case, ss clutch line, fluidampr harmonic dampener (see my thread in performance section for reason why i chose to get it), and loads of other stuff I can't remember. Plus all the stuff I have in my sig besides the FMIC and fuel pump, which was already on the car.
This stuff all looks nice and pretty but I lack the motivation to go out there and pull the old enigne. I have the engine hoist, plenty of heat to keep me warm. I just need to know what the hell I am doing all this for, and what keeps you guys going??

What keeps me going... knowing that fact that'll I'll be asking that after it breaks down.
Seriously though, just the fact that YOU did it.

I go through that stage all the time. Just don't touch it for a couple months and then one night you'll find yourself up till like 4am reading about random DSM shit and the next day you'll be wanting to go out there really bad. Then about 2-3 months down the road you'll find yourself back in the same situation.

I'm no stranger to working on it, trust me!
Maybe it's the whole process and just seeing everything I have to do before it gets running. I have all the parts, $4.5k spent in 4 months is a bit overwhelming thinking about it. What sometimes gets a fire under my ass, besides a night of beer and wings, is thinking about what that stroker and cams will sound like coupled with my full 3in exhaust. I mean, its gotta be somewhat more throaty over the 2.0.
But yeah, I think your right, I just gotta man up and fuckin do it.

I get down like that too. When something tears up I usually jump right into it to fix it....but it always seems like when I get it back together there is always some big ordeal that comes up and the car just wont do right....then I get pissed. Cause its like I work my ass off gettting it right...then it still aint right...so I usually don't mess with it for a week or so..or longer. My friends usually make me fix it...
But after you finish it its always worth it and your glad you did it.

Just do it man. My motivation just comes from the love of cars especially dsm's. It's more of a hobby and something I like to do than anything. The thing that keeps me going is knowing that I can hold my own with some of the shit talkin V8's, and knowing that I did all of the work myself. Don't get me wrong, I haven't had any catastrophic failures yet (knock on wood), and I'm sure it would get me down. But it damn sure wouldn't take me out of the game, just hold me back some.

After I wreck my talon, all my dream and plan is going thru hell, I was so deprate because its take me many year to find a perfect car ( black 2g awd dsm ), I learn how to drive stick because of that talon. I give up finding another awd dsm, end up with a v8 familly super charger, feeling good but still miss my dsm when ever I saw a 420A kid try to go fast and alway thinking to myself " dam I wish I still had my talon and show how slow that kids is  ".

First , doesnt belong in this forum. This is for DSM's and not really german cars.
Secondly , if you have questions you'll get more holp making your own thread.
Third , Go to autozone and tell them your check engine light is on and they scan for free.
Fourth , Double posting will get you in hot water.

 No shit. How long ago has it been since you went on that late night shopping spree Brian, like 15 or 16 months?
I thought about this one for a while yesterday and the thing that keeps me going is I just plain like doing it. I spun a rod bearing not this past summer but the summer before and you're damn right I took a month off, but I was back at it again in a few weeks. To me there isnt much more satisfying than finding a problem, tinkering on it, and fixing it. Sometimes I do lose sight of whats keeping me going, but I start to remember real fucking fast when I turn the key and hear vrrng vrrng vrrrrrooooooommm. :)
I get such great enjoyment from my Talon. Sure I've put in like an hour of work for every 2 miles I've driven (lots of de-jerry rigging) but there isnt much thats better than seeing the fruits of your labor. I would just go out and start working on it and when you get frustrated just do something else for a little while to clear your mind. I would bring my skateboard out to the shop this summer and when the car pissed me off I would skate for 10-15 minutes. By that time, I was pissed at the skateboard and the car looked that much better. Having some loud music, a buddy, and a 6 pack never hurt either.

The satisfaction you get when you finish and drive for the first time is enough for me. I sat there and questioned whether or not it was going to be worth it to finish my car, but once I drove it for the first time I realized why I did it. I had a smile on my face the whole time I drove it for a long time. Just get out there and do it man. You wont regret it.

Knowing that you are the doctor that performed that surgerory is what makes it worth while. Knowing every square inch of your ride is good too. I like learning new things, you gotta learn something new. If not that then new problems arise, then you fix them.

Thanks for the good words guys. Here is the plan:
I got a buddy coming over tomorrow about noon and we will be getting the old engine out. I figure i'll repay him later with a few drinks down at the bar while watching a kickass metal show.
I'll be blasting some Megadeth. That usually gets me pumped to rape and pillage and drive fast while taking lots of chances.

Dido. There's a station here called The Drive that plays all late 60s-early 80s. Very relaxing. There's also The Loop that plays 80s-new rock. Gets repetitive though. The Drive, I never hear the same song twice in one day.
And working with a Bud is always good. When I did the head one of my best friends was over and we just chilled and worked. He's a big guy so I used him for all the heavy work and stuck bolts. And compressing the hydrolic tensioner. No booze that day though.

Press Prt Sct ( print screen ) on your keyboard its on top of Insert key, Then go Start -> all program -> accessories -> Paint -> Edit -> Past.
BTW make sure you save as JPEG type. much smaller and good quality.

Anyways, I come bearing good news. I got my ass working on the Talon for 4 hours yesterday and 30 minutes today. The engine and transmission are completely out! I dropped the engine still on the cradle from underneath. Now this week will be disassembly and removal of parts I am going to re-use. Hopefully next weekend she'll be ready to drop in.

Negatory. If my instincts are correct, instead of pulling the engine out from the top, he just left the engine in place and lifted the car out around it. It's actually much easier, but you need a lift to do it, and a little more time.

I thought it was much easier and quicker pulling and putting it all back in with the motor and tranny together from the top...
tfoti
12-03-2007, 04:58 PM
I dropped the engine along with the entire tranny and steering system on its cradle. The front of the car was high enough to clear it and pull it out from underneath. Best option for my setup. If you still want to see what I mean I can get more pics. All in just under 5 hours.
