First of all, appologies if this progress report is a little disjointed. I tend to get carried away with a build so much so that I forget to take pics at crucial stages.

Anyway, I didnt want to miss out on contributing to this particular group build like I have done with previous ones, especially with all the interest its generated. I struggled to decide upon several projects I had in mind for this but it seemed fitting to try and replicate one of Ferrari's own 60th anniversary cars, either the FXX Evoluzione or the Scaglietti Sessanta. The latter was more appealing because of the modeling challenges involved so here we go...

For those not familiar, the Sessanta (that's italian for 60!:grinyes: ) is the special edition produced in limited numbers for Ferrari's aniversary. Basically it has a revised interior, different rims, two tone paint and a glass roof. A few pics can be found here - http://www.scuderiaferrari.pl/modele/drogowe/612/60anni/

Some basic vac forming was required for the roof. Very basic infact coz no vacuum was involved. I heated a sheet of 10thou clear sheet within a frame I constructed some time ago for a vac-form machine I was building (another incomplete project). The softened sheet was pulled down over a resin copy of the roof. This was not the first attempt however. Previously, I was confident that the heat of the sheet would not be sufficient enough to warp or melt the model - wrong! This is the 2nd Revell 612 body:frown:

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/2007_1115_181400AA.jpg

The roof was marked out and cut with circular saw in a motor tool. BTW, I highly recommend buying a motor tool with a seperate transformer with adjustable speed. Its a recent purchase of mine and I dont know how I managed without it! It provides so much more control. Although not pictured in detail, once the opening was cut, the remaing plastic was milled away to a depth of 20thou or so for the new glass roof to sit flush.

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/2007_1115_214417AA.jpg

Onto the interior. The original seat trim and detail on the door cards were cut and milled out with a motor tool. The new quilted trim was created with expoxy putty rolled out onto plastic card. By pressing the various openings, that had now been cut into the interior, onto the putty, I was able to cut out sections to fit snugly. By doing it this way I overcame the major headache if it were to be done in situ, particularly when it came to engrave the quilting detail which was done by pressing thin brass wire into the putty whilst semi cured.

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/2007_1124_154008AA.jpg

The center console differs greatly from the original too so more surgery required - its tool time again!... With tub interiors on models, I feel its extremely difficult to modify them by hacking them apart into sections as ultimately its a nightmare to reassemble again without encountering major fitment issues. Best to try to keep it in one piece if possible despite the awkwardness of filing and sanding in tight places.

I used a Dremel drill stand as a basic milling machine to remove all unwanted plastic on the center console creating a perfectly flat area to add to new detail. The section between the rear seats was also milled away but this was done by hand with the motor tool.

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/2007_1126_160200AA.jpg

This is where I'm upto at the moment. You can see the new center console is made up of a sandwich of plastic card with expoxy putty forming the contours around the rear AC vent.

great idea on the roof surgery!
i must say i'm still confused on how to 'heat' or 'warp' or bent the clear sheet into something i want for my 365P speciale roof...

i hope there's a much easier way to do this...so someone please post some simpler ideas if you have one...

thankx in advance...

Can't wait to see this one finished!

For those who ask about paint color, this particular car comes in a two tone of black and dark red metallic or dark gray metallic. Headlight bezels are silver.

Progress continues on the interior but I've since tackled the rims...

I've always found it alot easier to create new wheel designs using existing 1/24 rims. Building a symetrical wheel from scratch is very hard to pull off on the first attempt. For the Sessanta rims I used Fujimi's AVS model 5's as a base because of the similar 5-paired spoke configuration.

The conversion began by milling the face of the wheel to create a flat surcace.
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/2007_1206_172203AA.jpg

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/2007_1206_213913AA.jpg

Pieces of styrene strip were added to the shape the spokes. I later revised this by added more strip, shaping further with a little filing.
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/2007_1206_230831AA.jpg

The main bulk of the rim was removed to make it easier to work with.
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/2007_1206_232505AA.jpg

A sheet of 10thou styrene was glued to the face and trimed. Holes were drilled at all appropriate corners to create the necessary contours. I did this to avoid using putty later on which would be less accurate.
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/2007_1207_164048AA.jpg

Then trimmed the openings.
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/2007_1207_171820AA.jpg

Using thicker 20thou sheet, which is to allow for wastage when sanding later on, I traced out the design to be applied to the left hand spokes.
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/2007_1211_000425AA.jpg

The centre was shaped, wheel nuts added and its mostly complete. Just have to reattach to the rim and cast copies. Its not perfect but I'm happy with it enough to be part of a one off project.
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/2007_1218_211613AA.jpg

On the reverse of the wheel you can see all the additional styrene strips I added to create the shape. The only decent reference I managed to find for the wheels was a Youtube vid of the official unvieling and pictures of the Hotwheels 1/18 diecast.

Chris,

Great work on the roof and wheels. If you have any extra copies of the roof made, I'd certainly buy 2 from you. I plan on building two more 612's with the glass roofs. I also want to put the 20-inch Challenge style rims on my cars (which a lot of the Sessantas now have), but haven't been updated by the aftermarket people.

An update!!! I continue to work on this when time allows although its long overdue for any 60th anniversary tribute:uhoh: . More modifications have been made to the interior. The rear of the front seats has been reworked after finally getting hold of a good reference pic and I've also made the attachment for the seat belt . The dash has been extensively modified; I didn't like the air vent detail on the original part so I fabricated my own by shaping styrene tubing in a motor tool to produce the vent housing, a mold was made and then several resin copies. A jig was then made to produce the vent detail and these were inserted into the housings. The top of the dash was reshaped slightly to appease myself according to reference pics and I added a speaker grill which was created by punching a disc out of some Renaissance photoetched hex mesh with a punch and die set. I've also recreated the Bose head unit with discs of styrene of various sizes and thickness using the same punch/die set.

Some progress to report at last!

This was put on the back burner for a while, it took a bath in brake fluid as it was given a few too many coats of primer. Unfortunately the resin air vents were too delicate and the brake fluid desintegrated them. Therefore I had to go back a few steps make those details again, this time I've taken a few shots of the process.

And since I'm LONG overdue in finishing this for the 60th tribute, I've added a few more details which I was previously going to dismiss for the sake of a swifter build.

Resin copies of air vents. Original master made from styrene tube turned and shaped in a motor tool.

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/DSCF0088.jpg

Reworked detail in drivers footwell. I assume its some sort of changeable pad to protect from wear & tear.

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/DSCF0096.jpg

Revell's detailing for the large Bose speaker on the rear parcel shelf is total bobbins, so I played around with shaping some from photoetched mesh. It was very tricky but turned out better than I expected.

The painting of the interior has been completed, just a few small details to finish here such as seat belts, foot pedals, speedometer display.

I colour matched the brown for the leather interior by eye, primary colours are all you need. It actually turned out darker than I expected but I was happy with the end result.

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/DSCF00222.jpg

For the embossed Ferrari emblems on the headrests, I didn't like the look of just gluing the photoetched pieces on (I'm using the Lion Roar set here), so I opted to use them as masks with a contrasting shade of the base colour instead. The colour was lightened with white and a touch more yellow, then a small patch airbrushed where required. The etched emblem was tacked in place with the smallest dab of contact adhesive so that it could be peeled off then attached to the next part.

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/DSCF0025.jpg

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/DSCF0029.jpg

All parts of the interior were then given a wash coat of a dark brown oil paints to add depth and shading. Once dry, a lighter shade was dry brushed on to accentuate the highlights.

The pic below shows a before and after for this treatment. The effect is very subtle and does not show up very well in the pictures. All parts were then given a coat acrylic satin to seal the finish.
